The Soul of the Rose

Also known as "My sweet rose", this is one of Waterhouses's most successful works. Thought to be inspired by a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson, called 'Come Into The Garde Maud'. In this enigmatic image Waterhouse uses a warm palette of colours, including balmy pinks, earthy oranges and browns that evoke the seasonal transition from summer to autumn. The subject's elaborate dress is adorned with pools of rich gold interspersed throughout, which denote the wealth and prosperity that Waterhouse often portrayed through his work. This delicate but rich image makes for a sublime puzzle, complete with beautiful flower and garden-themed whimsy pieces.
