The property strikes a beautiful balance between historic elegance and contemporary comfort, creating a peaceful and refined atmosphere throughout. The rooms are exceptionally spacious, very clean, and thoughtfully equipped for a short stay. We especially appreciate the coffee and tea station, as well as the super-comfortable bed with crisp, fresh linen, which guarantees a great night’s sleep. The rooms are wonderfully quiet as well. The breakfast is another highlight, with a generous buffet selection and the option to order à la carte. A consistently outstanding stay and one we return to without hesitation.
We arrived and were concerned, the student halls of residence 4 story high blocks, surrounded the hotel and were nowhere to be seen in the booking photos. There was no disabled parking and a hill and stairs to walk up to the hotel. We got to reception and a lovely young lady checked us in and gave us lots of helpful information. Then the trek to the room which was the furthest possible distance away and up three floors, with lots of stairs. Never the less still being hopeful we got to the room slightly out of breath. The key cards don’t work ! We trek back down and get new key cards ! Back to the room and oh it is so small and dark and only one key card working. We decided to go and have a quiet lunch in the bar:restaurant, to be told there is only a selection of 4 sandwiches. Whilst waiting for the sandwiches there are four business people having a meeting with laptops and talking so loudly we can’t hear ourselves. Then another meeting arrives of a couple booking their wedding along with their parents ! I can safely say I now know I would not book a wedding at this hotel! Surely this should have been done in a private space for the couple. Although it did bring us entertainment that the poor couple were told as they had 72 guests they had to order canapes at £9.95 a head for four items, as the hotel needs 2 hours to turn the room around. But hey ho they could cancel the main meal starters ! Also that although they had 5 people doing speeches they would only be allowed 30 mins, why on earth is the hotel is dictating that, I don’t know, it is meant to be your day !!! The top table plans, they only sit 8 can the couple get rid of 2 of the 10 they wanted !! Then corkage wow £15 a bottle but the hotel stipulating you can only have one glass of fizz per guest and half a bottle of wine per guest !!! Shock they can have the hotel bottles but she would have to check the price for not champagne but some sparkling wine, joke. The sandwiches arrive the bacon was cold and the salad on the side was limp and horrible ! My husbands sandwich was terrible and he just ate the fish and left the rest. Back to the key cards we went to get another new key card and well, the supervisor was just rude and horrible to the lovely receptionist, we had met earlier. Saying she had done the cards wrong and whipped them both from our hand, without an apology or letting us speak to say one worked ! Back to the room we decided to go out for a walk! Come back and yet again the key card doesn’t work, at the same time moody supervisor walks past and opens the door with her master key. No apology but then saying what are you doing keeping them next to your phones ! She then says she will get us a new one and returns half an hour later, but no apology just felt like we were a hassle to her ! We went out of the hotel for dinner which was lovely and we were greeted by a lovely night receptionist when we got back. We both remark that it is such a shame the supervisor lady didn’t take note out of all the junior staffs behaviour as they were all so friendly. If you are still reading ! The breakfast was lovely the breakfast waitress was great. The beds are terrible and so are the pillows, the bedding had strange black marks on the underside of the duvet and were rough. The toilet paper is shocking I wish they used the toilet paper from reception ! You don’t get a bathrobe, there is no hot chocolate as per the description. The tv has hardly any channels and you can’t seem to re tune it ! Our key card failed again on the second day and as my husband had been for a hospital procedure that day, we gave up as the hike back and forth to the room was to much so we left a day early ! All in all the supervisor girl from Monday needs to take a note out of the junior staffs book, smile when she passes customers in stairwells and remember people are paying their hard earned money to stay at the hotel. The wedding planner lady should remember that people are planning their day and are not there to be told what they can and can’t do by the hotel !!
Second time staying here, this time to see a concert at City Hall. Check-in was 3pm, and we were early , but a slightly earlier check-in was off the agenda (there appeared to be commercial arrangement that meant the hotel only became a hotel after 3pm). We retreated to the bar...but it was shut. Opens at 3pm. We had a suite on the third floor, which was lovely, but there is no lift which meant dragging bags upstairs and down with my dodgy knee. Perhaps this should be made clearer, as it was a significant problem for me. Just outside our room was a snack station with bikkies, milk in a fridge and two fire extinguishers. There was a sign inviting guests to "Help themselves." I wish I had known this before our visit, as I would have rented a van to hold the fridge and fire extinguishers. Sadly they did not fit in my car boot. Brekkie was lovely, with a good range of veggie and non-veggie options. We called an Uber for our visit to town, but the pick-up point was on the main road, a short walk, but not welcomed by my knee (a problem with Uber rather than the hotel. A proper taxi for the return which whisked us to reception was better but twice the cost. I very nearly gave it 5 stars as it is great value, but if you have mobility isssues, give them a call first to select an appropriate room location, and if you arrive early bring a drink and snacks. And rent a decent sized van for the fridge and fire extinguishers.
This is a really interesting hotel in the university campus. A little difficult to find but worth the effort. The room is very comfortable with all the amenities you would expect. A generous en-suite is a very nice feature. Service is excellent and we dined in the lovely relatively small dining room. The food was excellent and the service impeccable. A drink in the bar was relaxing and comfy. I really recommend this hotel it's really relaxing place to stay.
Really good clean hotel. Comfortable rooms and tasty breakfast. We particularly like the fact there are small fridges on each floor with fresh milk, extra coffee pods and biscuits to help yourself to.
