Okay, picture this. It's a proper summer evening. You're by the sea, the air is buzzing, and you're surrounded by thousands of people all waiting for one thing. That was the scene last Saturday in Scarborough when the absolute legends, Texas, turned up and played a completely sold-out show.

If you were there, you know what I'm talking about. If you missed it, let's just say you missed one of the best gigs of the summer at the TK Maxx Presents Scarborough Open Air Theatre. But don't worry, I'm here to give you the full scoop on a night that was packed with timeless hits and pure energy.

A proper thank you to the crowd

You know when a band has been around for ages, but they still look like they're having the best time ever on stage? That was Texas. Fronted by the amazing Sharleen Spiteri, they didn't just play their songs; they owned the stage. And they made it super clear that the night was all about the audience. Sharleen actually stopped to have a chat with the massive crowd. She said:

“Without every single one of you buying tickets and records, we wouldn’t be doing this for almost 40 years. So without you, this wouldn’t be possible – thank you Scarborough.”

How cool is that? It wasn’t just a performance; it felt like a massive thank you party. After nearly four decades in the music scene, they’re still genuinely grateful for their fans. It just shows that for rock legends like Texas, it’s the connection with the audience that keeps the magic alive. The energy from the crowd was electric, and every person there felt like part of something special. This is what makes a live show more than just music – it's a shared experience, a brilliant memory made on a perfect summer night.

All the hits you could ask for

Right, let's talk about the music. Because, wow. For 90 minutes, Texas blasted out hit after hit. Think of any big Texas song, and they probably played it. The setlist was like a greatest hits album come to life. They kicked things off and the whole place went wild. We're talking absolute classics that even your parents would be singing along to.

They played a whole load of fan favourites, including:

  • Halo
  • Summer Son
  • Mr Haze
  • Say What You Want
  • Black Eyed Boy

Hearing Summer Son on an actual summer night in Scarborough? Absolutely perfect. It's one of those songs that just *is* summer. And then you’ve got anthems like Say What You Want and the brilliant Black Eyed Boy. It’s no wonder they’re one of the most successful bands ever. They burst onto the music scene with 'I Don't Want A Lover' and have just kept delivering brilliant tunes ever since. The whole audience was singing along to every word. It was a proper feel-good night full of massive hits.

Meet the brilliant opening act, Rianne Downey

Before the main event, the crowd was treated to something really special. The opening act was Rianne Downey, a rising country star who you need to keep an eye on. Warming up a sold-out crowd for a massive band like Texas is a big job, but she was fantastic. She's got this cool country-folk vibe and played some of her own original songs, which were amazing.

But she also threw in a couple of surprise covers that everyone loved. Imagine hearing a fresh take on classics like Rotterdam and ‘Don’t Marry Her’. It was the perfect way to get everyone in the mood for the incredible night ahead. It’s always great when you discover a new artist at a gig, and Rianne Downey definitely won over the Scarborough audience. A great start to a great night.
