News • September 15th, 2024
|The annual Northern Antiques Fair returns from Thursday, 26th to Sunday, 29th September 2024 at the scenic Garden Rooms at Tennants in Leyburn, North Yorkshire. This prestigious event, now in its fourth year at this venue, features an extensive display of art and antiques spanning six centuries.
With over 40 leading dealers from across the UK, the fair promises an incredible variety of artefacts, from the 15th century to contemporary works.

A tradition of art and antiques excellence
First held in 1951, this esteemed fair has garnered a loyal following over the decades. Originally based in Harrogate, it moved to Leyburn to continue showcasing a rich collection of antique and fine art pieces. This year, visitors can expect both returning and new exhibitors, with items ranging in price from a few hundred to thousands of pounds.
Participating galleries include notable names such as Walker Galleries, Garret & Hurst Sculpture, and Graham Reed Fine Art, alongside new faces like Peter Bunting Antiques and The Oriental Rug Shop.
Highlights from six centuries of art
Among the standout exhibits this year is a rare sandstone Madonna and child statue from Peter Bunting Antiques, dating back to around 1400. Art enthusiasts can also admire a watercolour of a kingfisher by Archibald Thorburn from Carnes Fine Art, and a stunning map of the United Kingdom, crafted by Dutch cartographer Johannes Blaeu in 1659.
These treasures, alongside works like Fred Yates' oil painting, depicting a lively girls' night out in a northern pub, ensure a diverse and exciting selection for collectors and casual visitors alike.
Noteworthy exhibitors and stunning artworks
This year's fair continues to impress with an extraordinary range of offerings. Exhibitors like Graham Reed Fine Art bring significant historical works, including Ripon Cathedral, a 1959 oil painting by Bertram Nicholls. Other top dealers like Walker Galleries showcase French Impressionist masterpieces, including a £20,000 oil painting by Marcel Dyf. With such variety, attendees are bound to find something that piques their interest, from 17th and 18th-century portraits to contemporary pieces.
A showcase of luxury and craftsmanship
Peter Bunting Antiques has an impressive collection of antique oak furniture and decorative art, including a figured yew and burr wood Windsor chair, dating back to 1860, and a beautiful portrait of a lady in pearls from 1680. Visitors will also be treated to luxurious Art Deco jewellery from Howards Jewellers and an exquisite pair of ruby and diamond earrings from the 1930s. With fine silver items and unique furniture, such as a George III ebonised balloon clock, the fair offers a feast of exquisite craftsmanship.

For those interested in preservation, the Fine Art Restoration Company will be on hand to share insights into their conservation work.
