Loved my visit to this station. We came to travel on the flying Scotsman. Are departure time was 8:45 There is lots of parking available just a short walk away run by the North Yorkshire countryside team. There are parking metres and please make sure you use them as they patrol and produce tickets readily. The station buffet was open by 8:00 am serving hot drinks and bacon butties etc. Apparently on our train there were 1800 passengers. We boarded very quickly and the train ran on time. When we returned there was the next passengers ready to board the 11:40. They were held back behind a barrier giving us plenty of space to leave the station. The volunteers are a credit to the organisation. Well worth visiting.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fantastic experience on the Flying Scotsman We had an excellent day! The staff at each station were brilliant — very helpful, clear with instructions and kind throughout. Everything was so well organised for such a special event, especially with hundreds of people boarding the train or watching and taking photos. Absolutely thrilled to have had the experience — a wonderful birthday treat and a day we’ll never forget! 🚂 ❤️
We bought the tickets the day before so we knew our train time. It was very exciting seeing the steam train coming around the bend into the station. We were very impressed with all the volunteers and how smartly they were dressed. They were very informative and helpful. The journey from Whitby to Pickering was just under two hours and the scenery was lovely. We stopped at several stations, all immaculately looked after and one was the station from Heartbeat. The experience is not cheap but if you like old trains it's worth it.
I myself have had the pleasure in visiting, as well as riding aboard a steam train along the historically immaculate, most enduring north yorkshire moors railway, especially to pickering station that I consider an excellent starting point of my train journeying ride up to grosmont (and back) via levisham, newton dale halt... and of course goathland, The surrounding scenery is as spectacular as ever, the setting of the NYMR within the heart of the exact national park behind it's name, as well as it's nature... is as uplifting now from when I myself first visitied the NYMR back in 2005, My last visit to the NYMR was back in September 2023, I'ld look forward to returning, yet revisit 'in-person' someday, for who I forever recommend this historically outstanding heritage railway that even dates back to 1836, All the volunteers, the staff, the crews, and other helpful workers play a vital yet crucial key role in running such a significantly spectacular heritage railway that's like a crown jewel in the north riding of our beloved whtie rose county of yorkshire. AH YES, I certainly most definitely indeed forever recommend the NYMR and other heritage railways that I've also visited in-person too. Also, during next year 2026 - it'll mark 190 years of the NYMR.
Absolutely lovely day out! Magnificent locomotives and wonderful scenery. A pity the train was basically overbooked with lots of people standing. But they lose a point for the sheer number of dogs on board... I don't mind dogs, but my wife does and there were far more dogs on board than I've ever seen on a heritage railway. Perhaps a 'dog carriage' or a 'dog free' carriage might be an idea?
