Dutch House

About

Description

In our relaxing, child friendly art café you can sit down, unwind and enjoy a healthy homemade meal surrounded by a range of stunning artwork to feast your eyes. We serve a fine selection of teas, coffees, homemade cakes, breakfasts (full English or a continental Uitsmijter), light lunches, homemade soups and Dutch specialities such as our famous sweet and savoury Pancakes and Poffertjes. If you fancy something different then this is the place to be, serving food with continental flavours, but also a touch of traditional English baking and cooking. Our cafe welcomes (muddy) cyclists, walkers and well behaved dogs whether seated inside or on our fantastic sunny courtyard. In the arts & crafts shop inside our cafe you can browse and buy unique art and gifts from local artists. The Dutch house food is prepared with fresh home grown and locally sourced ingredients and everything is cooked to order. Our menu includes a wide selection of Vegetarian options, for example a delicious pancake filled with roasted vegetables and feta. Gluten Free and Vegan options also feature to cater for all culinary wishes. Why not try our delicious GF almond cake, home made vegan soups or any of our pancakes which can be made with gluten free flour and vegan (using soya products). We also offer GF bread. Our infamous pancakes, created from traditional Dutch recipes, are eaten all year round and we offer a wide selection of delicious sweet and savoury fillings. Our savoury pancakes come with a fresh green side salad and are a filling lunch meal. Try our Bacon, Apple & Brie pancake, the Mozzarella, Tomato, Basil & Pine nuts pancake or if you want it really sweet a Banana & Chocolate pancake. A scrumptious treat for young and old. In the Netherlands pancakes are called pannenkoeken and eaten at dinner time. Pancake restaurants are popular with families and serve many sweet, savoury, and stuffed varieties. Pannenkoeken are slightly thicker than crêpes and usually quite large, 12" or so in diameter. The batter is egg-based and fillings include such items as sliced apples, cheese, ham, bacon, and candied ginger, all of which can be combined to suit your taste. Stroop, a thick molasses-like fruit-based syrup is also popular and can be teamed with bacon to recreate a traditional Dutch favourite. Poffertjes are another Dutch quick bread, similar to American pancakes but sweeter and much smaller. Made in a specially dimpled copper pan, they are flipped repeatedly to attain a soft textured centre. Whilst you indulge in one of our many pancakes you can also shop for Dutch products such as Liqourice (drop), Stroopwafels, Hagelslag, Speculaas, Schenkstroop, Appelstroop, Hollandse snoep (sweets) etc to enjoy at home in between your visits to the Dutch house. The Dutch house also comprises a ecological and sustainable garden focussed on attracting wildlife. The oasis contains a collection of native trees, herbaceous borders, a wild flower meadow and a display of sculptures. The gardens themselves are developed and designed by owner of Dutch house Sjaak Kastelijn, who is former manager of York Museum Gardens. Set on a 1.6 acre plot with lovely views to the surrounding fields and the hilltop village of Crayke, the gardens also feature the river Foss which meanders through the site. Due to the gardens natural setting in a rural area and being so close to the river, it is a haven for wildlife and a feeding station for bees, insects and birds. This beautiful landscape offers a chance for visitors of all ages to find out more about sustainable gardening as well as enjoying the peaceful tone with the perfect backdrop of the Yorkshire countryside. The featured wildlife meadow area is seeded with native wildflower and creates a splash of colour throughout the summer. Vegetables and scented flowers are grown in raised beds which allow visitors to enjoy them to the full. Also at the Dutch house is a small but established venue for showcasing and selling contemporary art in the region, Kunsthuis is the go-to place for artistic inspiration and escapism. The gallery features a rich range of work by prolific British and Dutch professionals, and we pride ourselves on bringing a varied and desirable selection of work to North Yorkshire offering something a little different in our contemporary tastes.
