Observing the Brightest Objects in the Universe at Mexborogh & Swinton Astronomical Society , Rotherham.

Join us for a journey through the universe's brightest wonders, a talk by Dr Vicky Fawcett

Dr. Victoria (Vicky) Fawcettexplores the nature and evolution of quasars, which are extremely luminous galaxies powered by supermassive black holes.Dr. Fawcett is an observational astronomer and a 2025 Caroline Herschel Prize winner who has recently transitioned to a fellowship at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Germany Dr Vicky Fawcett is an Astronomer at Newcastle University, where she researches quasars: extremely bright galaxies powered by supermassive black holes. She is part of two major spectroscopic surveys: the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and the Multi-Object Optical and Near-IR Spectrograph (MOONS). She is also very involved in scientific outreach and has recently accepted a fellowship position at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Germany.
