Sheffield Hallam University

I am a SHU alumna and completed my Master’s degree there as an international student. I highly recommend this university. The staff are extremely supportive, and the lecturers are friendly, knowledgeable, and always willing to help. The learning environment is inclusive and encouraging, which made my academic journey both enriching and enjoyable. Sheffield Hallam’s location is excellent, it is located right in the heart of the city centre, with easy access to bus stops and the train station. This makes commuting very convenient and makes student life much easier. I am currently working as an educator in London, which is also a lovely city, and I truly value the strong academic foundation and professional confidence Sheffield Hallam University helped me build. A great university with a strong support system and excellent teaching quality.

I had a largely positive experience at this university until my final year. Unfortunately, my experience in a robotics module significantly impacted me and continues to affect my mental well-being even eight months later. After missing a few lectures for personal reasons, I was subjected to a racist remark by the module professor, implying that I should be “going back on a boat.” Hearing something like this from a course leader at a diverse university was deeply shocking and hurtful. What made this worse was what happened on my graduation day, a moment that should have been one of pride and celebration. The same professor made dismissive comments such as “some people don’t deserve to be here” and told me not to approach him for a reference. This was incredibly disrespectful and overshadowed what should have been one of the best days of my life. I am sharing this not out of bitterness, but because universities have a responsibility to ensure that staff uphold values of respect, inclusivity, and professionalism. No student should leave their education carrying this kind of emotional burden.

I’m writing this review to share my experience with student support and administration during a difficult time in my life. When I was at university, I had already decided not to continue into the following academic year due to personal circumstances—including serious mental health struggles and the loss of a close family member. Despite this, student support advised me to enrol so I wouldn’t miss the cut-off date, assuring me that it was the right step. I trusted their guidance. Unfortunately, I dropped out within a month or two. I never attended any lectures and remained in contact with student support throughout, explaining my situation and the reasons I couldn’t continue. I expected compassion and flexibility. Instead, I was later sent to debt collectors for unpaid tuition fees for that term. I was shocked. I had made it clear how much I was struggling, and I had followed the advice given to me. Yet four years later, I’m still paying off this debt through a management company. It feels like I was penalised for seeking help and being honest about my situation. This experience has left me deeply disappointed. Universities often speak about supporting students’ mental health and wellbeing, but in my case, those words didn’t translate into action. I hope sharing this helps others think twice and encourages institutions to treat vulnerable students with more care and understanding

Shocking disability support. All "learning contracts" are generalised unless YOU tell them you want something different, no communication between departments so there is consistently someone missing information or not giving out correct information, want to appear welcoming to all types of students yet they consistently fail students like myself who have disabilities that are invisible, feel it necessary to create societies and clubs then bar anyone who needs an assistance or guide dog to be with them and who is protected UNDER LAW from taking part because THEY feel they can and THEY THINK theyre above the law. No consistent support, complete lack of support and very few actually trained people in disabilities as most of the learning contracts are just "see our link on how to work with [insert students disability] here" and then not much else....had i known they were so irresponsible disrespectful and incompetent I wouldn't have disclosed my assistance dog nor my disabilities to anyone.

Do not bother with their online courses. Save your time and sanity. After enquiring about their cyber msc, I was called repeatedly to enroll. I decided to, and was planning to take part in the October cohort. I went through the enrollment process; uploading CV and certs etc. there was zero communication from the enrollment team. They don't answer the phone or reply to emails. At one point David did answer but said I would now have to join the January cohort to which I agreed. Still no communication... phone and emails not answered. "Help" desk and main switchboard cant help. Thanks for wasting my time.
