At 4:06 AM, I was suddenly woken from sleep by what sounded like a male voice speaking in my room. The television had turned on by itself even though the remote control was nowhere near me, and there was loud audio but no image on the screen. In a quiet and dark room, as a woman staying alone, hearing what sounded like someone speaking was extremely frightening. My immediate thought was that someone had entered the room. It took me a few minutes to realise the sound was coming from the TV and to turn it off. However, those minutes of confusion and fear had already fully woken me up, and I was unable to fall back asleep for the rest of the night. I remained tense and unsettled, and my plans for the following day were completely disrupted. I went to the front desk to ask whether there had been any known system problems. The night staff member told me that this had never happened in the hotel before. However, there was no apology or acknowledgement that this malfunction had caused me distress. He did offer two “technical options” — to check the TV or to change rooms. When I asked how changing rooms could prevent this from happening again, I was told that there was nothing more he could do. I did not feel any willingness to reassure me or to help prevent a similar experience for a guest. The interaction left me feeling as though my fear was being treated as an inconvenience rather than a genuine guest concern. In the morning, I raised the issue again with another staff member. She repeatedly emphasised her own view that the staff had been professional and empathetic, rather than acknowledging my experience. When I spoke about how frightened and distressed I had been, she suggested that this was simply my personal reaction. She also interrupted me several times while I was speaking. During the conversation, she referenced a white male guest nearby as a comparison, saying that this guest would not react in the same way, which made me very uncomfortable. At one point, she questioned what I expected from the night staff and made a comment I could not clearly hear (it sounded like either “hook up” or “hug”), which further added to my discomfort. I paid for a night of rest and a sense of safety, but instead experienced a frightening incident and a very disappointing response from the front desk. I would not recommend this place.
Really easy to find and a short walk from the Interchange. Check-in was straightforward and there's two lifts and I never encountered a queue. Room was a smidge smaller than I've experienced in other easyhotels with no small table available. Room was a little chilly on arrival, but there are temperature controls in the room (that actually work!). Check out on the morning with Richard was quick and friendly, and thanks to Brad for getting my suitcase stored for the day. I will stay again next time in Sheffield.
Great location right in the city centre. The staff were amazing, shout out to Shawny! The room was really nice, small but very comfortable with a nice bathroom. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to spend a fortune.
