Free parking outside the church on the road No amenities here Unfortunately the church is closed unless there is a service on, however it's definitely worth a visit if in the area An earlier Saxon church may have stood on this site but no Saxon remains have been found but the present building dates back to the 12th Century. Interesting buildings and ruins and a fascinating graveyard
This is such a peaceful place to be, all you hear is the nearby sheep and birds. Whorlton old church is dedicated to the holy cross ( also known as the church of the holy rood ) was once part of an abandoned medieval village of Whorlton, all is left is the castle ruin a few hundred yards up the road and the church ruin, the oldest part of the building we see today dates back to the 11th century, inside is a wooden effigy of the 2nd lord Nicholas de Meynell. The last service here was held in 1875.
A lovely peaceful place. A small section of the church is complete but sadly locked, the rest is a ruin. A yew tree lined pathway leads up to the church. Newer graves to your right & older & weather worn to your left. The grounds are kept very tidy. A small area outside where road is slightly wider to accommodate a few cars.
Now this is worth a visit, ancient graveyard and church with spectacular views across the valley. You can see the castle from here. So don't forget to visit this historic wander ,Another must, just up the road.
Peaceful place to visit , lots of history around with the old castle too . Church is locked and very old . Still fascinating if your into history
