Brilliant stay at this guest house. Cheap with parking and great communication from the owners. Check in is from 2 but we could park from 11 - the owners guided us into the car park which you have to be blocked into but this wasn’t an issue for us due to walking everywhere. Lovely pub across from the guest house & a track next door. The rooms are comfortable, nice and warm with comfy beds. TV was a little small but bar that for the price it’s great. Thank you for a nice stay x
We originally left a 3-star review mentioning that, while the location and staff were great, the room unfortunately had a mould issue and while out of their control, the upstairs guests were arguing all night. However, after receiving a disappointing and unprofessional response from the owners, we feel it’s necessary to update our review. Their reply was as follows. "Thanks for your feedback Jack we will look into these issues but this is a far cry from our usual score so I believe the people above you have influenced your review.. Not much we can do about the noise from the room above if we don’t know anything about it Just for balance we found damage in your room and we spent 3 hours fixing it yesterday, so that’s why you left so early.. Regards Mark and Joyce" First, suggesting our feedback had been “influenced” by the guests above us is rude and an uneducated approach to handle a valid complaint. To clarify, the only “damage” was a curtain rail that came loose the moment we tried to draw the curtains — something that, as shown in the attached photos, appears to be due to poor fittings rather than misuse. We also did not leave “early” as stated; we checked out around 9 a.m, which seems a perfectly normal time. Regarding the noise, we didn’t report it overnight because there was no staff presence on site, and we didn’t think waking someone at midnight would have been appropriate. It’s disappointing to receive a defensive response instead of a simple apology or acknowledgment of the issues raised. The mould and overall cleanliness were far below expectations, and rather than taking our concerns seriously, the management chose to question our integrity. We genuinely appreciated the location, but the condition of the room and the attitude in response to feedback have left us very unhappy with our stay
Room was clean, however very loud from traffic noise and people outside, bed was uncomfortable and pillows were very flat and soft. Only enough milk to have one cup of coffee at night, which meant couldn't have one in the morning, on the plus side though, we arrived late for check-in (nearly 11pm) and owner was sitting waiting for us, and if you want to spend the night in town centre then the location is great. There is also a pub and a Tesco express straight opposite. The hotel itself was quiet.
Great location but on a main road. Room was spacious and clean. Friendly host and helpful. Room 1 has traffic noise but level was acceptable. Contact mark if your a forces veteran discount available.
First off, location. Excellent, 2 mins from the Minster. Free parking which is a God send in york, because if you've ever parked up on one of the carparks, you'll know how expensive they are. Upon arrival the owner met us to help park as it is a small bit of land at the rear, and probably fits 4 cars at a push. He was very friendly had no problems with him at all. Only time we interacted with him was on arrival and departure. Oh, check in says from 2, but we got in at 11, so even better. Ignor pictures of Gillygate on Google as most have nothing to with the guest house. Kerbside appearance, isn't great tbh. Go inside small foyer. We got shown to the room , stairs were a bit narrow. We just used it as a Base to sleep and didn't spend a great deal of time in it, and if you're looking for luxury, don't come here. The guest house is on a very busy rd and it's noisy. Anyway, surprisingly the room was quiet large and on first glance looked clean enough. Now let's get the negative bit out the way. As you will see in the pictures, who ever cleans for them is not doing a good job. The room is tiered looking, the kettle works but looks old, as is the AC unit, but the bed was large, comfy and clean, I even used a black light to check. Right... dust and cobwebs. Radiator valves haven't been used in a long time, which was obvious by the large amount of dust and cobwebs build up, the tv hadn't seen a cloth or Polish, again lot of dust on the back of it. Curtain poles covered in cobwebs, bathroom was small, the shower had black mold on the silicone around the tray, mold on the wall above it, the extract was caked in dust. I mentioned the noise earlier, and I thought the window must be open, but it wasn't. This didn't bother so much, but if you're expecting a quiet night's sleep, book somewhere else. I'm not being negative about the place, it is what it is and you get what you pay for. Room only.
