About Bolton Priory
Bolton Priory is a 12th-century Augustinian monastery turned active parish church located in North Yorkshire, England, set on the Duke of Devonshire's estate, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park on the banks of the River Wharfe. It is famous for its picturesque riverside ruins, continuous Christian worship spanning over 800 years, and iconic stepping stones.
Though mostly ruined following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 under King Henry VIII, the western nave was saved and continues to serve as an active parish church, Priory Church of St Mary and St Cuthbert.
Set in the scenic landscape, which created romantic landscape paintings of J.M.W. Turner in the early 19th Century. Famous for the dramatic contrast of roofless medieval ruins next to the flowing River Wharfe, popular scenic walking trails, and the nearby historical stepping stones.
