|On 21 August 2026, the Tong Street Post Office in Bradford celebrated its official reopening, marking a significant moment for the local community. Judith Cummins, the MP for Bradford South, performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony to welcome back this essential service that had been temporarily closed since October 2025. The post office, located at 395 Tong Street, BD4 9RU, is now under the management of Rizwan Patel, an experienced retailer with a background in running a family convenience store for the past 15 years.
Community Importance
The reopening of the Tong Street Post Office is not just about restoring a service; it represents a vital lifeline for many residents in the area.
Judith Cummins remarked:
“Post Office services are a lifeline to many people, and I am pleased to see this branch finally back open right in the heart of the community. This means people can once again access a wide range of essential services that have been dearly missed.”
This sentiment reflects the feelings of many locals who rely on the post office for various daily needs.
Daily Services Offered
The Tong Street Post Office is now offering a comprehensive range of services, available every day of the week:
Monday to Saturday: 8am - 8pm
Sunday: 9am - 6pm
This results in a total of 81 hours of service each week, making it very convenient for customers to visit.
Rizwan Patel, the new Postmaster, expressed enthusiasm about the reopening, stating:
“We are busy trying to spread the word that the Post Office and shop are now open as it had been closed for a while. People are really happy that the branch is open again as there is a big housing estate here and the elderly and families like to be able to walk here to send their mail and to pick up parcels.”
Range of Services
The post office provides a wide array of services tailored to meet the needs of both personal and business customers, including:
Everyday banking services
Western Union money transfers
Royal Mail, Parcelforce, and DPD services
Bill payments and car tax renewal
ID verification services
Foreign currency exchange and Post Office Travel Money Card
Insurance services
These offerings are crucial for the community, especially in an area where access to banking facilities is limited. Rizwan Patel is also keen to expand the retail side of the business, with plans to reintroduce newspapers and restock essential items in the shop.
Wider Impact on the Community
The Post Office plays a significant role in the local economy. With over 11,500 branches across the UK, it boasts the largest retail network, providing more branches than all banks and building societies combined. Research indicates that visits to the Post Office help drive an additional 400 million visitors to local shops and businesses, which can lead to an estimated £1.1 billion in extra revenue for High Street businesses.
Tajinder Khehra, the Post Office Retail Change Lead, highlighted the excitement in the community about the reopening:
“We know how important a Post Office is to a community and we are delighted to have restored service at the same location as before. There is a buzz of excitement in the community that the branch is back open.”
Convenience and Accessibility
For many residents, the Tong Street Post Office provides a much-needed access point for cash withdrawals, deposits, and balance checks. The internal Post Office ATM, which is free to use, has also been reinstated, making it easier for locals to manage their finances without having to travel far.
As Rizwan Patel pointed out:
“Now the Post Office is open, customers can once again use the internal Post Office ATM, which is free to use. There are no banks around here, but customers can withdraw cash.”
