Wakefield Council is inviting everyone in Castleford to share their thoughts on plans to enhance measures aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour in the town centre. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure Castleford remains a safe and welcoming place for both residents and visitors.

Public Spaces Protection Order

The Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) is a tool that helps local councils manage and control behaviours that can negatively affect communities. In Castleford, this order is set to expire in November 2026, prompting the Council to seek community feedback on extending it for another three years. The proposed changes aim to provide the Council with stronger powers over a larger area, which includes the busy retail park situated between Albion Street and the railway line.

Community Engagement

Councillor Rebecca Webster, who serves as the Cabinet Member for Safer Stronger Communities, emphasised the significance of community input in shaping these plans:

"PSPOs play a key role in helping to prevent and tackle anti-social behaviour. That’s why we’re looking to get stronger powers over a bigger area in Castleford."

“People want to enjoy our town centre without being affected by anti-social behaviour. These proposals will help make sure we have the right powers in place to protect our communities while continuing to work closely with partners to address the root causes of these issues.”

The Council is particularly keen to hear from Castleford residents, local businesses, and anyone who works in the town. Their feedback will be crucial in ensuring that the PSPO meets the community's needs effectively.

Proposed Changes

The specific proposals under consideration include:

  • Extending the PSPO for an additional three years

  • Introducing new rules to address a broader range of anti-social behaviours

  • Expanding the PSPO area to include the retail park, enhancing coverage in vital commercial zones

These changes aim to create a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone who frequents the town centre, whether for shopping, dining, or leisure activities.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

It's important to note that failing to comply with the PSPO can have serious consequences. Individuals who violate the order may face a fixed penalty notice of up to £100, or even a fine of up to £1,000 for more serious breaches. This serves as a deterrent and reinforces the commitment to maintaining a safe public space for all.

How to Get Involved

The Council has launched a survey to gather opinions and insights from the community. The survey is open until 27 September 2026 and takes just a few minutes to complete. Importantly, all responses are completely anonymous, ensuring that everyone can share their views freely. To participate in the survey, individuals can visit the following link: Castleford PSPO Survey.
