•This weekend, Pontefract Park will be buzzing with excitement as the Wakefield Armed Forces Day returns on Saturday, 4 July 2026. Running from 10am to 4:30pm, this event is part of a nationwide celebration of the UK's armed forces, honouring the dedication and sacrifices of both current and former military personnel.
Celebration of Heroes
The Wakefield Armed Forces Day is a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to come together and celebrate the contributions of those who serve or have served in the armed forces.
Cllr Wayne Beddoes, Wakefield Council’s Armed Forces Champion, expressed his enthusiasm:
“Everybody is welcome to join us at Pontefract Park this Saturday. It’s a great occasion for us all to come together and ensure that the contributions of past and present personnel in our Armed Forces are celebrated.”

This year’s event promises a packed programme filled with activities and entertainment for all ages. Highlights include:
Military displays and stalls showcasing the capabilities and traditions of the armed forces.
A Military and Veteran’s Parade featuring veterans, serving personnel, cadets, and standard bearers, accompanied by music from The Band of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment.
A thrilling Battle of Britain Memorial Flypast, featuring a Spitfire MkVb, flown by Squadron Leader Al Luckins. This iconic aircraft played a significant role during D-Day in World War II.
Two exciting Free Fall Parachute Displays from the Wings Free Fall Team, adding an extra element of thrill to the day.
Competing in a Tug of War, watching Cadet Drills, and enjoying performances from the military band.
A vibrant Military Village where visitors can chat with serving military personnel and cadets to learn more about their roles.
A market filled with delicious food, drinks, homemade crafts, and gifts, along with street food vendors and an onsite bar for refreshments.
Family-Friendly Fun
In addition to the military displays, the event is designed to be family-friendly, ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, can enjoy the day. Cllr Rebecca Webster, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer Stronger Communities, noted:
“Wakefield Armed Forces Day will be a fun-packed and free day out for all the family to enjoy. And most importantly, it gives people an opportunity to show their support for the Armed Forces and the outstanding work they do for our country.”
Parking and Accessibility
For those planning to drive, there will be onsite parking available at Pontefract Park. Parking attendants will be present to assist, and clear signage will guide visitors. However, it’s important to note that the play area car park will be reserved exclusively for Blue Badge Holders. Given the expected turnout, car-sharing or using public transport is highly recommended to ease congestion.
Prepare for the Day
As the weather can be unpredictable, attendees are advised to prepare accordingly. If it’s a warm day, bringing drinks, sunscreen, hats, and shade is wise. Well-behaved dogs on leads are also welcome, making it a perfect day out for the whole family.
