Jubilee Bar at Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Reopens After Major Refurbishment

This summer, visitors to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway are enjoying a pint in a truly unique setting aboard the Jubilee Bar. This popular carriage, which originally served as a bar in a Leeds city centre pub, has recently undergone extensive refurbishments and is back in action, looking better than ever.

Refurbishment Journey

After a winter spent in Oxenhope Yard, the Jubilee Bar has emerged from one of the most significant makeovers in its history. The transformation is a result of hundreds of hours of hard work by the railway's dedicated Carriage and Wagon volunteers. While the bright new paintwork is certainly eye-catching, the most important changes are often those that go unnoticed.

Significant repairs were made to ensure the bar's longevity, including:

• Replacement of corroded steel

• Reconstruction of doors

• Repair of steam heating systems

• Overhaul of water systems

• Cleaning and repainting of the bogies and underframe

This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the historic vehicle remains in service for many years to come.

Interior Improvements

The inside of the Jubilee Bar has also received a complete makeover. The plumbing system was completely stripped down and rebuilt, allowing for hidden leaks to be traced and repaired. The bar has been fitted with refurbished beer pumps and new beer lines, ensuring that everything runs smoothly for thirsty passengers.

Additional interior upgrades include:

• New flooring in the toilet and vestibule

• Replacement of damaged ceilings

• Fresh paint on the walls

• New carpets throughout the carriage

Even the smallest details were not overlooked. Original Mk1 ceiling lights were restored, while new ceiling vents were created using 3D printing technology. Radiators, wallpaper, and various fittings were all carefully attended to, contributing to the bar's historic charm.

Innovative Features

A local company crafted a new set of removable tables specifically for the Jubilee Bar, using brackets designed and made by the railway’s own volunteers. This allows the carriage to be quickly adapted for different events, making it a versatile venue for a variety of occasions.

Behind the bar, new shelving has been constructed, which retains the original shutter, along with new radiator covers designed to match the carriage's classic appearance.
