|This October, a remarkable 12-year-old from Leeds, Jacob Newson, is preparing for an extraordinary challenge: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. His goal? To raise funds for the RAF Benevolent Fund, a charity that has supported him through some tough times after the loss of his mother to cancer.
Jacob's Ambitious Climb
Jacob, affectionately nicknamed ‘Jacob the Pilot’, has set his sights on reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro, which stands at an impressive 5,895 metres (or about 19,341 feet) high. The climb is scheduled for the end of October, and Jacob hopes to celebrate his 13th birthday on the summit on 31 October. This climb is not just a personal milestone; it is also a heartfelt tribute to those who have supported him.

Training for the Challenge
To prepare for this daunting trek, Jacob has been training hard. His training regimen includes:
Regular trekking in the Lake District, known for its beautiful but challenging terrain.
Successfully climbing Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK.
Participating in 35 Parkruns, which totals approximately 175 kilometres of running.
Jacob's determination is evident as he gears up for this adventure, which will involve eight days of trekking through varying weather conditions, including temperatures that can plunge to -20°C.
Support from Family and Friends
Joining Jacob on this incredible journey will be his father, Andrew Newson. Andrew expressed how grateful they both are for the support provided by the RAF Benevolent Fund:
“The RAF Benevolent Fund and the whole RAF Family have been incredibly kind to Jacob, especially since he lost his mum to cancer. Not only have they helped nurture and strengthen his love of all things aviation, but they have also given him some incredible opportunities that we will never be able to thank them enough for.”

Fundraising Efforts
So far, Jacob has raised over £14,300 for the RAF Benevolent Fund, showcasing the generosity of his friends, family, and local community. Donations can still be made through his JustGiving page, where supporters can contribute to his fundraising efforts.
The RAF Benevolent Fund, established over a century ago, provides essential assistance to current and former members of the RAF and their families. This includes everything from financial support and welfare breaks to mental health resources and youth programmes. Jacob’s climb will help ensure that this vital support continues for those in need.
