Thwaite Mills, a historic watermill located in Stourton, Leeds, is set to begin an exciting new chapter following its recent sale to four passionate owners. The Grade II listed site will undergo a full restoration starting this week, marking the first time it has been open to the public since it closed in April 2024. The restoration aims to transform Thwaite Mills into a vibrant working museum complete with a pub, café, and a lovely canal-side beer garden.

New Owners and Restoration Plans

Will Habergham, Terry George, Michael Rothwell, and Kirk Allen are the new owners committed to bringing Thwaite Mills back to life. This restoration comes more than two years after the mill closed its doors, and the team is eager to involve the local community in shaping the future of this cherished landmark. The owners plan to work alongside volunteers from the relaunched Friends of Thwaite Mills group, aiming to foster a sense of community and ownership over the project.

The restoration is expected to take around 12 months, although no specific reopening date has been set yet. During this time, the community will have opportunities to get involved, share ideas, and influence how the site develops. “Thwaite Mills was saved by its community once before, and it'll be brought back by its community now,” said Will Habergham, director of Thwaite Mills.

Community Engagement and Future Events

Early plans for Thwaite Mills include:

  • A working museum showcasing the history and operations of the mill.

  • A pub and café offering canal-side seating for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenic views.

  • Landscaped grounds that will be accessible for walkers, runners, and dog walkers.

  • A programme of free family events to engage the community.

  • The return of popular events such as craft fairs and car boot sales.

  • Potential future activities like weddings, small music events, and a beer garden.

These plans aim to create a lively hub for both locals and visitors, ensuring that Thwaite Mills remains a key part of the community. The owners are keen to establish a welcoming atmosphere where everyone can come together to enjoy the space.

A Rich History

Thwaite Mills has a fascinating history, having been built between 1823 and 1825. Initially, it served as a flax mill and later produced whiting and paint, operating commercially until 1975. A broken weir posed a threat to its future, but local volunteers stepped in to save the mill, leading to its opening as a museum in 1990. For many years, it welcomed visitors and became a beloved part of the local heritage until its closure in 2024.

Get Involved

The relaunched Friends of Thwaite Mills group is open to everyone, including former members of the original Thwaite Mills Society. Members will receive regular updates on the restoration, be invited to volunteer days, and have a direct influence on the mill's next chapter. This approach reflects the owners' commitment to transparency and community participation, with the restoration process documented through a social media diary.
