|Young people in Rotherham are stepping into the spotlight with a new exhibition that showcases how music has significantly impacted their lives. Titled Why Music Matters, the exhibition opened on 18 July at ROAR's Grove Road Garage Gallery and is set to run for a few more days, coinciding with the excitement of the Tramlines music festival in nearby Sheffield.
Exhibition Overview
Why Music Matters brings together a variety of creative works including artwork, photography, film, sound, and music, all created by young individuals through various youth music projects in the borough. This exhibition is a celebration of their stories and experiences, highlighting how music has played a crucial role in their development.
Connecting Through Music
The exhibition connects with several notable projects, such as the Signals Festival, the Rotherham Battle of the Bands, and Tales Untapped: A Rotherham Opera. Each of these projects has provided young people with opportunities to express themselves, build confidence, and develop new skills.
Liam O'Shea, Community Music Manager at Rotherham Council, explained the essence of the exhibition:
“Why Music Matters celebrates the creativity, talent and achievements of young people across Rotherham. The exhibition shows the difference music can make in helping young people grow in confidence, develop new skills and find their voice, while sharing some incredible creative work with the wider public.”
Importance of the Exhibition
This exhibition follows Rotherham's recognition as the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture, a title that has further highlighted the importance of cultural and artistic opportunities for young people. By showcasing their work, the exhibition not only provides a platform for these young individuals but also encourages community engagement and support for local talent.

The exhibition is free to attend, allowing everyone to enjoy and appreciate the creative expressions of Rotherham's youth. Remaining opening dates include:

Monday 27 July, 3.30pm-6.30pm
Tuesday 28 July, 3.30pm-6.30pm
