|Wakefield Council is set to introduce a new Lane Rental Scheme later this year, aimed at reducing the disruption caused by roadworks on some of the busiest routes in the area. This initiative will charge companies, including utility providers, for carrying out work during peak times, encouraging them to schedule their projects more efficiently.
What is the Lane Rental Scheme?
The Lane Rental Scheme is designed to minimise the impact of roadworks on traffic flow and overall travel times. By imposing charges, the Council hopes to encourage organisations to plan their works outside of busy periods, which is when roads are most congested. This means that if a company chooses to work on key roads during rush hour, they could face a hefty charge of up to £2,500 per day.
Why is This Important?

According to Keith Anderson, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Planning:
“We know that road works across the district cause delays and disruption to drivers. By having the power to charge for these works, we expect to minimise that disruption.”
