|Cyclists in York are set to benefit from significant upgrades to cycle stands throughout the city centre, with improvements taking place this September. The City of York Council has announced that ten locations will see new cycle parking facilities, making it easier and safer for residents and visitors to park their bikes.
What Changes Are Happening?
The existing cycle stands, many of which are in poor condition, will be replaced with more durable “Sheffield” style stands. These stands are popular because they allow bikes to be locked securely in a way that protects them from theft and damage. In addition to the standard stands, the council will also introduce larger spaces specifically designed for cargo and inclusive cycles. This means that families, people with mobility challenges, and those using cargo bikes will have more options available to them.
Funding for this project comes from Active Travel England, an initiative aimed at promoting cycling and walking across the country.
Councillor Kate Ravilious, the Executive Member for Transport at the City of York Council, expressed enthusiasm for the upgrades:
“It’s great to see city centre cycle parking having a much-needed upgrade. Alongside the standard cycle parking, the new spacious inclusive cycle parking will accommodate trikes, cargo, and family cycles to name a few, enabling more people to choose to cycle.”
Upgrade Schedule
The upgrades will take place at various locations, and the work has been carefully scheduled to minimise disruption. Here’s a list of where and when the upgrades will happen:
High Petergate (near the Dean Court Hotel): Monday 7 – Wednesday 9 September.
Davygate:
One set near Mappin & Webb/Breitling Boutique: Monday 7 – Friday 11 September.
The second set near St Helens Church, Slaters & JD Sports: Tuesday 29 September – Friday 2 October.
Parliament Street: Wednesday 30 September – Friday 2 October.
Piccadilly (next to Ladbrokes/German Donner Kebab): Monday 21 – Wednesday 23 September.
St. Andrewgate (beside Café Nero):
Wednesday 16 – Friday 18 September & Monday 21 – Wednesday 23 September.
Deangate (next to the Cross Keys public house): Monday 14 – Thursday 17 September.
Kings Staith (opposite the Lowther public house): Wednesday 9 – Friday 11 September.
Cumberland Street (beside York Dungeon): Wednesday 23 – Friday 25 September.
Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate (near the loading layby): Monday 14 – Thursday 17 September.
During these dates, cyclists are advised to remove their bikes and locks from the stands as they will not be available for use. Additionally, some locations may require temporary road closures or changes to loading bays to ensure the safety of pedestrians and workers.
Keeping Everyone Informed
The council has taken steps to keep residents and nearby businesses informed about the upgrades. Letters have been sent out to those affected, and information will be displayed on the stands themselves. This proactive approach is designed to ensure that everyone is aware of the changes and can plan accordingly.
