|York City Football Club has made an exciting addition to their squad by signing forward Jovan Malcolm on loan from Stevenage. The young player will be with the Minstermen until January, providing valuable experience as the team aims to make a strong impression in League Two this season.
Malcolm's Journey
Jovan Malcolm, who is just 23 years old, began his football journey at the age of six in the academy of West Bromwich Albion. He worked hard and, in 2021, signed a new three-year contract with the club. His first taste of professional football came when he was loaned to Accrington Stanley during the summer of 2021. During his time there, he played in 13 matches and managed to score once, gaining essential experience in League One.
After returning from Accrington in January 2022, Malcolm briefly joined Solihull Moors in the National League. His big moment came in 2023 when he made his first-team debut for West Brom in an FA Cup match against Chesterfield, where he scored his very first goal for the Baggies. However, his time at West Brom was short-lived, as he moved to Cheltenham Town shortly after, although this stint lasted only ten games before he was released at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Success at Gateshead
Malcolm found a new home at Gateshead, where he had a successful campaign, scoring nine goals in the National League. Notably, he netted two goals each against Wealdstone and Forest Green Rovers. During this time, he faced York City twice and also contributed to three goals in four matches in the National League Cup. His impressive performances caught the eye of other clubs, leading to his signing with Stevenage at the start of the last season.
At Stevenage, Malcolm scored once but was loaned out to Barrow for the second half of the season. Now, he has made the move to York City, aiming to bolster their attacking options as they navigate their first season back in League Two.
Excitement for the Future
After officially joining the club, Malcolm expressed his excitement:
“I’m delighted to be here. I have always admired the club and what they have done over the last few years, so being able to get this over the line has been brilliant for me.”
His enthusiasm highlights the positive atmosphere surrounding the club as they work to build a competitive team.
Malcolm also reflected on his previous visit to the LNER Community Stadium, where he played on New Year's Day 2025. He was impressed by the club’s fanbase and facilities, saying, “To be honest, when I came here (with Gateshead), I was surprised by the fanbase, the set-up, and the stadium, and it really left a good impression on me.”
