|Residents and drivers in York are being urged to prepare for significant resurfacing works on Beckfield Lane, starting on Monday 17 August 2026. This project is part of the City of York Council's ongoing commitment to improve local roads, with a record investment in the Highways Maintenance Programme for this year.
Details of the Resurfacing Works
The resurfacing will cover over 1 kilometre of Beckfield Lane, specifically from Wetherby Road to the junction with Lidgett Grove. This initiative follows recent improvements in the area, which included resurfacing footpaths, enhancing tactile crossings (which help people with visual impairments), upgrading drainage systems, and installing new bus shelters.

Councillor Kate Ravilious, the Executive Member for Transport at the City of York Council, commented on the importance of these works:
“Having already completed significant road resurfacing works at Bishopthorpe, Osbaldwick and Monks Cross, amongst many others across the city, we continue to deliver our record programme of planned Highways Maintenance works for 2026/27 alongside emergency repairs.”
“We’re responsible for over 500 miles of roads across the city and maintaining them is crucial in helping everyone to get around the city efficiently. We’re grateful for everyone’s patience while our contractors get this work done. Impact on Local Traffic
To facilitate the resurfacing works, road closures will occur on Beckfield Lane from 8am to 5pm on weekdays. However, the road will reopen each evening unless there are exceptional circumstances. It's also important to note that Beckfield Lane will remain open on weekends and on the August Bank Holiday Monday (31 August).
Phase 1: Wetherby Road to Ostman Road starts on Monday 17 August and is expected to finish by Monday 24 August. Access to Ostman Road will be from the Boroughbridge Road end of Beckfield Lane.
Phase 2: Ostman Road to the junction of Lidgett Grove will begin on Tuesday 25 August and is expected to be completed by 5pm on Friday 4 September. Access to Ostman Road will be from the Wetherby Road end of Beckfield Lane.
Guidance for Pedestrians and Cyclists
During the construction, pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Pedestrians and those using mobility aids can continue using the newly resurfaced footways in the area. Crossing points will be established to ensure safe passage, and signage will direct individuals appropriately.
Cyclists will be diverted via the A59 Boroughbridge Road, Carr Lane, and B1224 Wetherby Road throughout both phases of the works. It is essential for cyclists to follow the diversion routes for safety.
Bus Services Adjustments
Bus services will experience some alterations. Buses will operate normally until 9.30am, after which they will be diverted until the road reopens at 5pm. This means that passengers should plan for possible delays during the work period.
Phase 1: The 5A bus will divert via Ostman Road, Danebury Drive, Wetherby Road to Ridgeway, not serving the closed southern section of Beckfield Lane. Alternative stops include Ostman Road, Acomb Green, or Ridgeway.
Phase 2: The number 5 bus will divert via Carr Lane, Almsford Road, Woodlea Avenue, and Danebury Drive to The Green. Passengers should use Boroughbridge Road (Malvern Avenue) or any stop on Ostman Road during this phase.
Vehicle Access and Additional Information
For motorists, there will be no access through the road closure between 8am and 5pm on weekdays. However, the road will reopen each evening, providing access for residents and delivery services. Temporary traffic lights will assist in maintaining access to Ostman Road during the works.
Carers and residents needing transport for medical appointments will be allowed through the closures, and businesses requiring deliveries are encouraged to communicate with the council for arrangements. Waste and recycling collections will continue as scheduled, so residents should ensure their bins are out on time.
