|Exciting developments are underway around York Station as construction work progresses, bringing the public spaces closer to completion. The improvements aim to create a more inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors alike, enhancing the experience of one of York’s busiest transport hubs.
Upcoming Works and Road Closures
On the nights of Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 September, there will be a temporary road closure in place to facilitate essential works at the crossing area in front of the station’s portico. These works will include the installation of enhanced drainage systems, which are crucial for managing rainwater and preventing flooding. The road will be closed from 8 pm to 5:30 am on both nights, reopening each morning to allow traffic to flow as usual.
During the closure, vehicles will still be able to access the Station Portico and Tea Room Square, but through traffic will be diverted away from the area. Access will remain available for:
Taxis
Blue Badge holders
Those picking up or dropping off passengers at the Short Stay Car Park
However, taxis will only be able to approach the portico from the Blossom Street end of Station Road, and all vehicles exiting Tea Room Square will need to turn left towards Lendal Bridge.

Progress Made So Far
Recent weeks have seen significant progress in the ongoing works. The improvements include finishing the paving and kerbs, adding markings to the new cycle lanes, and cleaning the drainage gullies in the area. These enhancements are part of a larger project aimed at transforming the front of York Railway Station into a more functional and pleasant space for all users.
“Over recent days and weeks, people will have noticed more and more areas opening up, including the seating next to the city walls, and it has been great to see people starting to use and enjoy them,” said Councillor Kate Ravilious, the Executive Member for Transport. She added that the latest closures are a step towards completing the highways elements of the project, which will soon allow for the opening of cycle lanes, expected by early October.
Future Plans and Additional Works
Following the overnight closures on 14 and 15 September, additional works will be required. On the night of Monday 21 September, weather permitting, further line markings will be added for the cycleways near Left Luggage and the station. This work will be managed carefully to minimise disruptions, with no significant restrictions expected during this period.
Once the cycle lanes are operational, much of the fencing will be removed, allowing for greater access and enjoyment of the newly revamped spaces. In October, additional planting will be introduced to enhance the area further, making it not only functional but also visually appealing.
A Collaborative Effort
This ambitious project, known as the York Station Gateway, has been made possible through a collaborative effort involving several key partners, including the City of York Council, Network Rail, LNER, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. The project is funded through various sources, including the West Yorkshire-Plus Transport Fund and the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund.
The overarching goal of the York Station Gateway project is to create an improved transport interchange and public spaces that encourage more walking, cycling, and the use of public transport. By transforming the space around the station, the project aims to foster a more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.
