|Starting from Monday 7 September 2026, the City of York Council will begin resurfacing parts of the A1079 Hull Road to improve the road for drivers and cyclists. This project is part of the ongoing highway maintenance programme aimed at making travel smoother and safer for everyone in the area.
Details of the Resurfacing Works
The resurfacing will cover approximately three miles of the A1079, specifically between York Road in Dunnington and the City of York boundary at Kexby Bridge. The work will be carried out by Lane Rentals Services on behalf of the council, and it will take place at night, from 8pm to 6am. This timing is designed to minimise disruption for daytime traffic.
The project will be divided into three phases:
Phase One: From York Road, Dunnington junction to the Common Road junction, starting on 7 September and finishing by 6am on 12 September.
Phase Two: From York Road, Dunnington junction to near Kexby Stray junction, taking place overnight on 12 September, with the Common Road junction closed for resurfacing.
Phase Three: From Common Lane junction to Kexby Bridge, running from the night of 13 September until 6am on 21 September.
Each morning, the road will reopen unless there are unexpected circumstances. This phased approach aims to ensure that work can be done efficiently while maintaining access for local residents and businesses.
Community Impact and Communication
Local residents and businesses have been informed about the upcoming work through letters, helping them plan ahead. Councillor Kate Ravilious, the Executive Member for Transport, expressed the council's commitment to enhancing the roads in the area: “We continue to deliver our record programme of planned Highways Maintenance works for 2026/27 alongside emergency repairs. This stretch of the A1079 is the latest to receive significant repairs that will make journeys easier for people in the area and across the region.”
The council is also working to keep disruptions to a minimum. Emergency services will have access through the construction zones, and bus services such as the X46 and X47 will continue to operate on their usual schedules, escorted through the works.
Alternative Routes and Safety Measures
During the closure periods, a signed diversion route will be in place, guiding traffic via the A64, A19, A63, and A614 to rejoin the A1079 at Shiptonthorpe. It's important to note that there is no alternative route for cyclists at night, so they are advised to follow the vehicle diversion route. For pedestrians and those using mobility aids, safe routes will remain open to ensure access to homes and businesses.
Parking in the working area will be suspended during the overnight closures to facilitate the resurfacing process. Residents with specific access needs can coordinate with site traffic management operatives to ensure their requirements are met during the construction.

The council has allocated significant funding to maintain these assets, ensuring that roads and pathways remain safe and accessible for everyone. The total commitment includes £8.8 million in the council's budget for the year, alongside additional funding from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
