Getting to Yorkshire from Within the UK

Yorkshire lies right at the heart of Britain, and with an exceptional communications network, it’s much closer than you think, whether you plan to travel by rail or road.

By Rail

High speed trains from London to the cities of York, Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster and Hull can take as little as 100 minutes. Yorkshire’s cities and market towns are also easy to get to from other parts of the country.

CrossCountry: regular services from across South West England and the Midlands

London North Eastern Railway (LNER): LNER offer fast and frequent trains to Yorkshire from London Kings Cross, on the east coast.

First Hull Trains: direct services from London King’s Cross to Howden, the Wolds and Hull

Northern Rail: If you want to explore the cities, Yorkshire coast and countryside in one day then choose from three of our Day Ranger or Round Robin tickets which include the East Midlands and Yorkshire. Hop on and off all day on a particular route or within a defined area – the choice is yours.

First TransPennine Express: direct services into the region from Liverpool, Manchester Airports, Newcastle and Middlesbrough

Grand Central is an open-access passenger train operator – We carry passengers from London Kings Cross to York and the North East and to Doncaster and West Yorkshire

By Road

Coach travel

Today’s coaches are a comfortable alternative for those travelling on a budget. National Express Coaches operate regular direct services from London to the cities of York, Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster and Hull. With the M1 Motorway providing fast access to the region, National Express services from London (Victoria) to Leeds take as little as four hours.

Once you’re in Yorkshire, there are many local coach and bus services available to get you to your final destination. Further information on regional and local services is available here.

Car

From the South: the M1 and A1 provide excellent links.

From the South West: the M5 and M42 link to the M1.

From Wales: use motorway connections from the M6 from North Wales and the M4 from South Wales.

From the Midlands: the M6 provides links to the M62, taking you right into the heart of Yorkshire. Alternatively the M1 provides excellent access from all over the Midlands.

From the North West: the M62 brings you right into the heart of Yorkshire and speeds you to the A1.

From the North East: the A1 serves as the main route into Yorkshire.

From Scotland: access to Yorkshire is made easy via the A1 from Edinburgh.

By Air

Leeds Bradford Airport offers flights from a range of UK airports. This includes flights London Heathrow with British Airways, Aberdeen and Southampton with Eastern, Belfast, Newquay and Glasgow with Flybe, Guernsey with Aurigny and Jersey with Jet 2 Holidays. In addition, Ryanair operates  a Dublin route and regular Dublin and Cork services are also available with Aer Lingus.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) is the UK’s newest purpose built international airport, having commenced operation in April 2005 on the site of the former RAF Finningley air base. The Airport is located 7 miles from Doncaster and 25 miles from Sheffield, serving passengers across Yorkshire, the Humber and the North Midlands.  The airport has recently seen a new link road opening, the Great Yorkshire Way from the M18 to greatly improve access and journey times.

Other airports but a short journey from Yorkshire include: Manchester, Liverpool, East Midlands, Newcastle, Durham Tees Valley. Long haul flights can connect to Yorkshire via good rail links, via major airports around London, at Heathrow and Gatwick.
