Good pies, atmosphere and welcoming staff, what more could you want. Been a few times now and it never disappoints. There are so many options for the pie filling. I’ve had meat and potato pie and steak and kidney pie so far with mash potato (not shown in the photo) and mushy peas. But there are so many more options to choose from on the menu. You can choose short crust pastry or the cobbler pastry which is made with suet and is my favourite. My relation say they have a good selection of beers.
I recently visited this charming local pub with my parents and was absolutely delighted by their brilliant pies! With about 20 different varieties, you can choose from three topping options: pastry, mash, or dumplings—a unique twist that caters to all pie lovers. The food is fresh and home-cooked, which really shines through in every bite. The friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere make the dining experience even more enjoyable. The only thing that could make it better is if they offered gluten-free pie options, but this is only a minor note. Nonetheless, I'm sure we'll be returning soon for a dumpling-topped pie!
The gluten free menu is unsurpassed. The chef was willing to do whatever it took to make sure my intolerance was catered for, even to the pint of sourcing oil for a second frier when I looked disappointed when she explained recent supply problems had meant she currently didnt have a dedicated gluten free frier. Often when an establishment says they cater for gluten free they have a couple of options but the malt shovel made me feel at home with their willingness to adapt any menu item as far as they were able. On top of this the quality if the food was amazing and I wished I lived closer so that I could try more of their pies.
I tried a chicken and mushroom pie with chips and mushy peas. Whilst the puff pastry topping was slightly soggy the pie filling made up for it. Lovely pieces of tasty chicken and nice mushrooms. The chips were fine and the peas were beautiful. I also liked that the gravy came in its own little pot. I really don't like it when my meal comes and is over gravyed. The place itself was on the quiet side when I visited but it's a really nice place and the staff on duty were great. It's well worth a visit her I reckon!
Stopped for dinner as driving south to London and had spotted their pie menu online. The choice of pies was unbelievable, homemade and something for literally everyone. It ended up being a bit of a Man vs. Food moment, but absolutely delicious. If you like your pies, check this place out. The option for different toppings was great - we went with the dumpling topping. Yes, dumplings on top of a pie - two of my favourite food groups combined!
