The WORST chippy I have experienced yet, was a frequent customer here in store and online but after the chips I was sent today, I will not be returning. Chips not fresh at all look old, brown, wilted and smell terrible!
I recently visited The Codfather in Barnsley, and I have to say it’s one of the best fish and chip shops I’ve been to in the area. The first thing that stands out is the freshness of the fish—crispy, golden batter with perfectly cooked cod. The chips were generous and well-seasoned, and everything felt freshly prepared rather than pre-packaged. The shop itself is small and busy, which is a testament to its popularity. There was a queue, but it moved fairly quickly, and the staff were friendly enough, although at times it felt a bit hectic when takeaway drivers were prioritised. Despite that, the overall atmosphere was welcoming, and you could see why it has such a strong local reputation. I also liked the variety on the menu—while fish and chips are the main attraction, there are other options like kebabs and extras for anyone looking for something different. Prices felt good value for money, especially given the portion sizes. Overall, my visit to The Codfather was very enjoyable. If you’re in Barnsley and fancy a proper, freshly-cooked fish and chip meal, it’s definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared for a queue if you go at peak times! Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5) – excellent food, busy but worth the wait.
"I didn’t think it was possible for a meal to be both aggressive and disappointing, but here we are. We waited 45 minutes for our drinks, only for the water to arrive at room temperature and the 'signature cocktail' to taste like a cleaning product mixed with regret. When the food finally arrived, the steak was so overcooked I wasn't sure whether to eat it or use it as a spare tire for my car. My partner’s pasta was a literal swamp of grease; I’m pretty sure I saw a tiny ecosystem forming in the bottom of the bowl. To top it off, the music was so loud we had to communicate via hand signals, and our server seemed personally offended that we existed. At one point, I watched a pigeon fly into the kitchen and, honestly, I think it was the most competent member of the staff.
Been going to this chippy the day it opened not no more the last 2 times here all they are interested in is the side window orders waited 20 mins for chips fish cake that was already cooked and was second in queue
Always an excellent experience, personable, friendly and top notch food!
