Ever wondered how that parcel you ordered late at night turns up on the doorstep the very next day? It’s not exactly magic, but it’s close. A lot of clever planning and some seriously impressive warehouses are involved. And speaking of impressive warehouses, there’s some big news coming out of Yorkshire. The parcel delivery giant, Evri, is making a massive new move. The company has just made an announcement about a huge investment in a new facility in Barnsley, which is set to shake up the world of online shopping for small businesses and give the local area a proper boost. This is a big step for the Evri Group, expanding its already huge network.

So what’s happening in Barnsley?

Basically, Evri is putting more than £4 million into a brand-new fulfilment centre right in Barnsley. Think of a fulfilment centre as a massive, high-tech stockroom and post office all rolled into one. When someone clicks 'buy' on a website, this is where the item is picked from a shelf, packed into a box, and sent on its way. This new facility is going to be huge – 265,000 square feet, to be exact. That's about the size of four professional football pitches. This isn't just any old shed, either; it’s a major investment designed to speed up the entire parcel delivery process.

This whole project is fantastic news for the town. The announcement confirmed that this new hub will create over 150 new jobs, which is a brilliant boost for the local community. It comes at a great time, too. Barnsley was recently named the UK's first ever 'Tech Town', recognising its growing reputation for innovation and attracting business. This move by the Evri Group slots in perfectly, adding a state-of-the-art logistics facility to the town’s growing list of achievements. The growth of the logistics sector in Barnsley shows just how important the area is becoming for the country's delivery network.

Levelling the playing field for smaller shops

So, a big new warehouse is great, but what does it mean for the average person or a small business? Well, this is where it gets really interesting. One of the standout features of this new fulfilment hub is the incredibly late cut-off time for next-day delivery. Retailers using the facility can take orders all the way up to 11.59pm and still get the parcels to customers the next day. This is a game-changer. Imagine someone running a small business selling handmade jewellery from their spare room. Suddenly, they can offer the same speedy delivery options as massive online retailers like Amazon. It allows smaller retailers to compete on a much more even footing.

The new facility will also support same-day dispatch, seven days a week, and even help with Amazon Prime distribution. This provides incredible flexibility. For the customer, it means more choice and faster delivery from a wider range of sellers. For small business owners, it’s a chance to seriously scale up. The centre is designed to support international growth, helping those 'bedroom CEOs' take their products to a global audience. This expansion of the Evri network provides crucial support for business growth across the board.

Key Features of the New Barnsley Hub

  • 11:59pm Next-Day Cut-Off – Allows small businesses to compete with major retailers on delivery speed

  • Cutting-edge Automation – Orders can be picked, packed, and ready for dispatch in under an hour

  • 7-Day Operations – Parcels are processed and sent out every day of the week, speeding up the entire logistics chain

  • International Network Integration – Provides a simple path for businesses to start selling to customers around the world

The clever tech behind the speed

How can Evri promise such a quick turnaround? The secret is automation. Although the company got the keys to the site on 18th March, it’s now undergoing a major fit-out ahead of its launch in July 2026. This involves installing some of the latest sorting and packing technology. This high-tech gear will mean that from the moment an order is placed, it can be picked, packed, and enter the delivery network in less than an hour. That’s seriously quick.

The location of the new hub is also a clever bit of logistics planning. It's being built less than 100 metres from Evri’s existing super hub in Barnsley, which is their largest operational site. This means parcels from the new fulfilment facility can be fed directly into the main national and international network every single hour. It's like building a super-fast slip road directly onto the motorway, ensuring there are no delays in getting the parcels on their journey. This seamless integration is key to offering better and faster delivery options.

A growing global network

This Barnsley announcement is the latest step in a much bigger plan for the Evri Group. Its fulfilment operation has been expanding rapidly since it was launched in 2021, showing consistent double-digit growth. This isn't just happening in the UK, either. The success of their first fulfilment centre in Basildon has been followed by new sites in the USA, the Netherlands, and even Oman. This global expansion, which includes the strategic acquisition of other logistics specialists, is cementing Evri's position as a major player in international parcel delivery.

David Saenz, the Chief Commercial Officer at Evri Group, commented on the new Barnsley investment. He said:

“The launch of this purpose-built fulfilment facility, designed to meet the needs of the shopper of today and tomorrow, will bring exciting opportunities to some of the UK’s most loved brands as well as our country’s deep reservoir of small and medium-sized companies.”

“We’ve paired cutting-edge fulfilment technology with a direct connection to the Evri Group’s well-established and fast-growing domestic and international networks, meaning whatever the business need, we have a solution.”

It's not just the bosses who are excited. Amy Wilshere from Furocity, a sports nutrition brand that uses Evri for its fulfilment, was also full of praise.

“Evri has been an ideal partner to support our growth, and we’re thrilled about the new Barnsley fulfilment hub.”

“The ability to order at midnight, have the package in their network within an hour and be delivered the next day will be amazing for our customers.”

This new hub is all about making the entire dispatch and delivery process smoother for everyone involved.
