The Olive Branch has a long history stretching back over 100 years when it was first opened as a dressmaker and milliner’s shop, becoming a haberdashers at a time when Addingham boasted up to 90 shops and was bigger than nearby Ilkley. The current shop still boasts the same wooden features and fittings from those times, which helps to transport you back to an earlier era as soon as you step in through the door.
The shop became The Olive Branch when it was bought by Jill Atkinson from the original owner , Phylis Roe, in 2005, the name being chosen as it symbolised the most important gift of all, that of kindness and friendship, which Phylis had given freely to anyone who came into her shop. When Phylis died, aged 90 on St Valentines Day 2006, her funeral procession began from the shop that she had run for nearly all of her life and the entire village came out to pay tribute to a very special lady. When Jill decided to sell the shop in 2012 the Olive Branch of friendship and kindness was extended to the new owner Danuta Johnson, who has pledged to maintain the history and integrity of the shop, along with her daughter Victoria and long serving assistant Caroline.
Come into The Olive Branch for a warm welcome and shop in an atmosphere free from the stresses and strains of everday life, and without any pressure to buy anything – although once you have seen the wonderful things on display we are sure that you may well be tempted. Don’t worry, though, as we have gifts and cards to suit all shoppers at all prices, but if you only want to come in and have a look around, to chat, to get out of the bad weather or away from the sun, or if you just want to bathe in the nostalgia of the intimate but spacious surroundings there will always be a warm Yorkshire welcome awaiting you.
