Don’t work with this business if you are a sole trader. I did a personal tax return in FY 23-24 with Bel and had a good experience, so when I set up my own business I went back to Turpin. However, this time, I had the misfortune of dealing with Liz. Slow response: I had my initial meeting with them at the start of March. Despite mentioning I need to be up and running quickly because my business was starting, I was still chasing to get set up by the start of April (AML on the 7th April) and only was enrolled onto the accounting software half way through the month. I had a handful of questions as I was getting set up, but I had to email about 4 or 5 times just to get a basic response (which often didn’t actually answer the question) Mistakes: I paid for my tax return in FY 23-24 but they made a mistake with that so I ended up being chased with threatening emails for an outstanding account, even though I’d paid the invoice I’d received in full and never had a ‘softer’ email to explain this on their side. That was apologised for by Bel, but then when I started my business I signed up for their go-cardless, and they again made a mistake and didn’t charge me. Liz emailed me about this, and I responded (to get 0 reply). She insisted she had called me when my call records show she had not and then (even though she’d reactivated payments on her side for the month of september) suspended my quickbooks licence without any communication. Rudeness: Liz frequently got my name wrong which just shows a lack of basic attention. When I had to follow up to get responses, she never apologised and was extremely curt. One time she attached an email she’d sent as if to imply I’d just missed her response - but when I opened it I could see she’d not sent it to me (just herself). No wonder I never got it! As mentioned, she also lied to say she had called me about the go-cardless situation. Extortionate fees: I have a very simple business. At the end of the year, there will be 11 invoices with one line item on each, and a few expenses to calculate which I have provided in a spreadsheet and ordered format. When I had my initial conversation with Liz I explained this and we discussed 6 months at their rate (which broadly aligned with my quote from the previous year + inflation + quickbooks) but then once the six months was up she said that it was for the full year. This is £720 for perhaps the most basic tax return you could imagine. The rudeness and hostility was some of the worst I’ve experienced in a professional context. I strongly get the impression that this company only cares about their biggest clients and don’t really care about smaller ones. Incidentally, I called three other accountants before parting ways with Turpin - all of them said Turpin’s costs were beyond unreasonable and provided me with estimated quotes at about 50-60% of the rate Turpin retrospectively engineered. Avoid avoid avoid!
