The visitor centre contains a very good museum, shop, toilets and area for sitting. The staff are friendly and helpful.
Well worth a visit to this English Heritage site. Small museum with artefacts and telling the history of the castle, clean toilets, gift shop with usual EH items. No cafe but hot and cold drinks on sale, plus crisps/biscuits. Excellent informative tour by Graham. All staff friendly and helpful. BUT.... avoid the Castle Hill car park down the road - this car park is NOT run by English Heritage - requires app/pay online or by phone. Allows 5 minutes but app is poor. Stated fee £3 for up to 12 hours but an extra 30p "convenience charge" is added. Avoid this car park - plenty of free parking in the streets around the castle- and disabled parking is available in the castle grounds.
A great little information centre, small café, clean toilets, and a good little museum, telling you about the history of the castle, parking was free on the side street, but if you phone them up, they will open a gate for you, not a very big car park, mainly for disabled. Worth visiting before the castle.
Excellent facility with very friendly, helpful staff. Sells guidebooks and souvenirs. Clean and tidy. Has toilets. Very good, informative, interesting little museum with very good displays. Has artefacts on show and lots of information boards and castle models. Very well put together. On the day I visited, they were also selling hot drinks and homemade cakes in the room adjoining. Very good cakes! Also, they had put on an informative and interesting day of displays and activities to mark Remembrance Day. Bravo English Heritage, all was good!
Much to look at and guided tours (twice a day on Saturday). Outer curtain walls are still in place, and the central keep in good condition through renovation. There are binformation boards around the inner bailey to guide . The keep has been revisions inside, and there are displays and videos to show life in earlier periods. The museum at the entrance is small but contains a lot of artefacts and descriptions. There is a small children's activity area on one side with puzzles, building block, and dressing up. Well presented. Worth a visit.
