Royal Mail has recently unveiled a new collection of special stamps that celebrate the beautiful and often overlooked world of moths in the UK. Released on 2 July 2026, this exciting set features 10 stunning illustrations that highlight the diversity of these fascinating insects, created by renowned wildlife illustrator Richard Lewington.

Stamps Featuring Moths

This set showcases a variety of moth species found across different habitats in the UK. Each stamp is designed to reflect the unique characteristics and beauty of these creatures, which play an essential role in our ecosystems. According to David Gold, Director of External Affairs & Policy at Royal Mail, “British stamps have often showcased the natural world, and this beautiful set puts the remarkable diversity of British moths in the spotlight.”

The stamps include detailed illustrations that capture the vibrant colours and intricate patterns of each moth species. The full list of moths featured in the collection includes:

  • Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia)

  • Puss Moth (Cerura vinula)

  • Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth (Hemaris fuciformis)

  • Dark Bordered Beauty Moth (Epione vespertaria)

  • December Moth (Poecilocampa populi)

  • Dark Crimson Underwing Moth (Catocala sponsa)

  • Scarce Crimson and Gold Moth (Pyrausta sanguinalis)

  • Swallow-tailed Moth (Ourapteryx sambucaria)

  • Hedge Beauty Moth (Alabonia geoffrella)

  • Buff-tip Moth (Phalera bucephala)

The Importance of Moths

Moths are often misunderstood, with many people associating them primarily with their tendency to munch on clothes. However, in reality, only two species in the UK are known for this behaviour. Most moth caterpillars feed on a variety of plants, including leaves, fruits, and even fungi. There are over 2,500 species of moths recorded in the UK, compared to about 80 species of butterflies, showcasing a remarkable diversity that is often hidden from view, as many moths are nocturnal.

As noted by Dr Phil Sterling, an ecologist and expert on British moths and butterflies:

“Interest in moths has blossomed in recent decades, with the advent of phone cameras, ease of identifying them, and sharing finds on social media.”

Collecting the Stamps

The stamps and a range of collectible products are available for pre-order starting from 2 July 2026, and they will be on general sale from 9 July. The presentation pack, which includes all 10 stamps, is priced at £14.45. Enthusiasts can order these items online at www.royalmail.com/moths or by calling 03457 641 641.

Moths and Climate Change

The number of moth species in the UK is on the rise, partly due to a warming climate that encourages moths to migrate north from Europe. This change is allowing once-rare southern species, such as the Dark Crimson Underwing Moth, to become more common. As climate change continues to impact ecosystems, the role of moths in these environments becomes increasingly significant.

Royal Mail's new stamp issue not only celebrates the beauty of moths but also aims to raise awareness about their ecological importance. These insects contribute to pollination and serve as food for various wildlife, making them vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems. The illustrations on the stamps serve as a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the need to protect these often-overlooked creatures.

As the excitement around these new stamps builds, they offer a unique way for collectors and nature lovers alike to appreciate the enchanting world of moths. The combination of art and education in this stamp series highlights the rich biodiversity of the UK and encourages everyone to take a closer look at the natural world around them.
