The reason I review this woodland as five star is because one of my biggest interests is the Industrial Revolution combined with the outdoors. I entered the woodland up the public footpath at the end of Plains Lane, Elland. Walked up towards the top West Side and then only made my way down S W with the intention of heading down towards Cromwell nature spot. Riverside walks into the Woodland about 300m I noticed a great amount of bell pits. I don't know whether these were for or coal or iron however judging by their appearance and how it's tied with the environment around them I'd guess that most of these are late Iron Age. A lot of coal underfoot. The Woods are covered in downhill mountain bike trails, great to watch them but be vigilant of bikes at speed. When I was there the lads were sound I bumped into had a brew. Was great they had this option there! Anyway, on into the woods I stumbled across the chimney and pipe kiln firm dating back to 1909, if I recall. A relic very much still in use of Georgian industryial heritage. This I had no idea was there and I made my day! Will have to come explore in more detail soon. Lovely spot, especially if you like History, industry and nature.
Nice place to walk during bluebell and wild garlic season.
Good place for mountain bikers which sadly makes it dreadful in winter time and after heavy rain. Churned up paths from the bikers and extremely slippy under foot at this time of year. Wait until the mud dries up before considering going.
Such an amazingly beautiful wood. Every visit is different x
Good for walking dogs
