About Halifax Gibbet

The Halifax Gibbet stands as a chilling reminder of the town's unique and often brutal judicial past. Located in Halifax, this historical landmark is a reconstruction of the infamous 16th-century 'Halifax Axe', a primitive form of guillotine used for executions. Visitors can witness the replica device and learn about the local law known as 'gibbet law', which predated the more famous French guillotine by centuries. The original stone base of the gibbet was discovered in the 1800s, adding authenticity to this intriguing historical exhibit.

Often described by visitors as an interesting piece of history, the Halifax Gibbet provides a compelling glimpse into medieval justice. An informative board onsite explains the background and significance of the gibbet and its use in the town. While the wooden structure is a reconstruction, its presence marks a pivotal site in Halifax's heritage, inviting contemplation on law, order, and punishment through the ages. It's a key stop for those interested in local history and dark tourism.

Great piece of story about how people back in the day were executed, there is a list of the people who died under this penalty sentence and stories of who could escape (and recaptured years later). Its a pity that is not very well ilumimated because I found this things very interesting and may attract more people

Well this is a piece of Halifax history obviously they have let it go to junkies n drunks which is a shame this place should be looked after maybe used on them who have vandalised it but it took me ages to find it the first time but now it’s easy to find but the history behind it plus the running man pub there’s a good story not sure if it’s been made into a film but would be nice restored.

Interesting piece of history. This is a 16th century guillotine located in Halifax. It’s not much to look at. The base is original and was discovered in the 1800s but the wooden device itself is a reconstruction. There’s also a very helpful information board. Worth a visit if you’re passing and interested in the history. Great for a photo opportunity with your head in the block!

Now has barriers put up around it and seems to be missing its blade. I get the impression it's not been looked after well by the council or by locals.
