Thorney Mire Woodland Retreat

Really did enjoy our stay here, the place itself is very cosy. Red squirrels visited everyday along with other wildlife. Host was really helpful. If I had one slight negative it’s that we were really looking forward to using the hot tub but given how cold it was it took us 4.5 hours and a lot of wood to get it up to temperature. It was a little disappointing given the price we had paid for the two nights. Would stay here again but perhaps when it’s a lot warmer.

We arrived late, very late, in the pouring rain, yet were greeted with welcoming smiles and torches by the friendly owner, and shown to the Shepherd’s Hut. It rained throughout our stay but the roaring fire, soft rugs and loads of red squirrels kept us happy. We saw red squirrels, pheasants, blue, black and coal tits, chaffinches, nuthatches, pheasants, and an actual owl - and that’s all from the front door of the hut! The red squirrels are really sweet and inquisitive. We wanted for nothing. The hut is lovely. The views and walks are tremendous. I managed to slip down an entire hill and land in some leaves at the bottom. Great times. We shall return.

One of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed. The skylight above the bed gave the most spectacular view of the stars at night. Wildlife everywhere, felt like I was in a snow white movie! Walks from the doorstep to Hawes and surrounding areas. Cabin was warm, luxurious and had what we needed. Be mindful you can't take hair straighteners as the place can only run on low voltage appliances, not a problem for me, the weather would have undone my efforts anyway 🤣 Will certainly be returning

Wonderful weekend at an incredibly beautiful place! The Shepherd’s hut was beautifully decorated, cozy, and spotlessly clean, and felt completely private. And the squirrels!! They scamper across the deck throughout the morning, and we also enjoyed watching coal tits, nut hatches, a woodpecker and a chaffinch. We can’t wait to visit again.

We stayed in the Lookout, what a fantastic place, the Red Squirrel experience is just fabulous, we have seen fleeting glances of red squirrels in many places but nothing like this and so close.....wow The place is spotless and sits in a great location, looked after by Caroline & Simon...thankyou we will be back and have recommended to many like minded friends. My wife says I have a bad track record of booking short stays, however on this one, maxed out on Brownie Points...so again thankyou. Vincent and Georgina (Notts)
