We visited in January 2024, our second visit. As fans of Last of the Summer Wine, we popped to the church to see the graves. It was nice to find the church open this time.
A beautiful peaceful place. So delighted to get the chance to whisper a quiet thank you, to two of my favourite characters Compo and Cleggy, for all the laughs you've given me over the years and still to this day.
It not often you get to chuckle next to a grave or two, but being at the graveside of Peter and Bill is just what you'll get. A very pleasant resting place. Fond fare well to the flat cap and bobby hat chaps of the last of the summer wines.
This place is an absolute gem for any Last of the Summer Wine fans! Peter Sallis and Bill Owen are buried here, (and next to each other!). Tributes are still being left and maintained. The one surprise for me is that they don't publicise it! There's no signs guiding you to the church, so only found it by researching.
The final resting place of The Last of the Summer Wine stars Bill Owen & Peter Sallis. Peter is also very well known as the voice of Wallace in the animated Wallace & Gromit series of films. The graves are at the rear of the church. There's a well-worn path that runs at the side of the main path up to the site. St. John's is a gentle uphill walk from the village of Holmfirth.
