The Art Market

Holmfirth Indoor Market, 22nd & 29th June 2014, 10am – 4pm

The Art Market embraces the spirit of the Tour de France and provides its own take of the cycle theme. The show is a celebration of art, design and contemporary craft.

Alongside the 100 exhibiting artists showing their work, we have interactive spaces inspired by cycling, recycling and upcycling. Our wearable art theme is to encourage people to be creative throughout the day. There will be two interactive areas for the public to get involved over the two Sundays.
The team of organisers, Victoria Robinson, Brendan Hesmondhalgh and Emily Stubbs, say that “everyone is getting involved in the community with this year’s show” The summer show, as always, features 100 artists working in a unique mix of disciplines including jewellery, textiles, sculpture and painting, and some new interactive additions including:

Creative Ties

A fun and interactive activity! Design and make your own creation out of cardboard to wear around The Art Market.

Art Spectacles

Create your own crazy spectacles out of recycled materials and wear them around the Art Market!

‘Vanstallation’

‘Quilty the caravan’ will make its first appearance at The Art Market.

“The Knitted Dress Project – a life size figure will stand on top of the caravan with a flowing dress made up of squares of knitted plastic bags. This centre piece for the show is being created right now by an ever increasing group of men, women and children who have got the plastic bag knitting bug.

Knit to Gather came out of this, an eclectic group of people meeting regularly, and gathering together members of the community to knit. Squares of knitting are also arriving in the post from Art Market friends knitting around the country…I love the idea of the mass collaboration creating The Knitted Dress Project. Visitors will be able to have a go and keep knitting the dress at the show and tell us their knitting stories”.

Refreshments and live music throughout the day.

Every year the Art Market picks a certain number of ‘newcomers’ who are provided with mentoring and guidance from the team. They receive help with displaying and pricing their work correctly and selling to customers. Newcomers this year are portrait painter Ruth Fitton, installation artists Jana Dostal and Isobel Cortese, and printmaker Hannah Josey.

The Art Market are very excited that jeweller Chris Boland will be showing at the event on Sunday 29th June. Chris was born in York and studied Metalwork and Jewellery at Sheffield Hallam University. Since graduating, he has worked as a self-employed artist, jeweller and metalworker. His work sells at selected galleries and shops around the country. He currently maintains a studio at the Porter Brook studios in Sheffield. His jewellery is very bold and architectural.

Chris Boland’s Artist Statement

My fascination with inorganic structure is used to inform my bespoke jewellery pieces. Strong, bold shapes stress the unique qualities of the inclusions of the gemstones. I draw inspiration for surface treatment from architectural metalwork and sculpture. Marks made during the construction of the work are allowed to remain or are emphasized. By design, the stone is offered up to the viewer, always in a pleasing and unusual way and the rings look as good off the hand as on.

The gemstone is of fundamental importance in my work. All the stones I use are natural and untreated in any way. I believe that it is important to tell the story of the stones using my unique designs in metal.

Why do you think it is important to showcase art and design in the UK? Do you think Yorkshire is leading the way on independent artists?

‘The Art Market prides itself in showcasing the very best of art, design and contemporary craft from around the UK. We have many excellent artists and designers right on our doorstep and our aim is to provide a platform through our events for the public to have the opportunity to buy and commission outstanding artwork and meet the makers face to face.

As well as our public events, the Art Market also provides networking opportunities and artistic development through our directory, stand design and presentation workshops, plus mentoring any newcomers to the show.
By supporting the development and networking of our artists and championing the buying and commissioning of artwork to the public at our events, the Art Market is helping push Yorkshire to the forefront of showcasing independent artists and their work.

Traditionally London has always led the way in showcasing art and design. We want to be able to make the North of England, particularly Yorkshire, a creative destination for visitors to be able to come to events like The Art Market and see exciting, innovative and outstanding artwork and have the chance to meet the makers. ‘ Victoria Robinson
