I'm not from the area, Durham actually, so I hope people don't mind me commenting on the matter but my boyfriend lives locally. While visiting during the summer holidays walk and visit different areas to introduce my boys to the area we are planning on moving too and we were in such disbelief that a graveyard/cemetery, church and pond can be left in such a state ... and there are soldiers burried here too. I've tried to do a little research to see who owns the place but can't find any.thing up to date. Well done to the chap who tried to do something himself. I'm thinking we may have to too.
i am despaired to read that gravestones have been removed and potentially ground that my ancestors thought was the place to be laid to rest is taken advantage when no one was looking! with the review from Liam i am inclined to say Kirklees should be doing a lot more about this church! councils should know that there is a new generation finding out what local councils have let happen because they thought no one cared enough. Thank goodness for people like Liam!
I've updated my 1 star review to a 3 star review today (22/09/23) due to being able to get the Churchyard tidied up a lot with help from my colleagues at Cheetham Jackson, soldiers and donations from Colne Valley Garden Centre. Rather than moan about a problem and try to find who should be fixing it. I've decided its best to just fix it. It's a shame that the graveyard and Church are in the condition they are in. Graves are totally destroyed and there 4 unkept soldiers graves on the site. The Church is grade 2 listed but the private owner has let it fall in to total disrepair. It's ground are totally overgrown, it's roof has huge holes in it and I'm sure the water damage inside is horrendous. A Grade 2 listed building is listed in order to protect its unique character. No protection has taken place here, the building is in ruins.
