So, what exactly is a spiegeltent?

Okay, imagine stepping back in time. A Spiegeltent, which is Dutch for 'mirror tent', is a huge, round tent made of wood, canvas, and decorated inside with mirrors and velvet. It’s got a real vintage, bohemian vibe, with plush red booths to sit in and a unique, intimate atmosphere that you just don't get anywhere else. It’s the sort of place that feels magical the second you walk in. This year’s Spiegeltent festival, supported by the family jewellers Ogden of Harrogate, is setting up shop in Crescent Gardens from 25 June to 4 July. It’s the perfect setting for ten days of incredible live performances, from high-energy cabaret to chilled-out jazz.

Kicking things off with a proper Yorkshire party

What better way to start a festival than with a band that knows how to get everyone on their feet? On 25 June, Leeds’ own Hope & Social will be bringing their massive energy to the Spiegeltent. Often called "Yorkshire's own E-Street Band," these guys are famous for their brilliant, uplifting shows. It's not just a gig; it's an experience. Their music is a fantastic mix of soul, indie, folk, and even a bit of disco, all wrapped up with that classic, no-nonsense northern humour. They've been making people happy with their music for over a decade, and their performance is guaranteed to kick off this Harrogate festival with a bang.

From dazzling glamour to dancing in silence

The night of 26 June offers a brilliant two-for-one experience. First up, the festival favourites House of Burlesque make a welcome return. They bring all the glitz, glamour, and fun you could ask for. Think dazzling costumes, fantastic routines, and a whole lot of rhinestones. It’s a world of vibrant cabaret where everyone is welcome to enjoy the show.

But the party doesn’t stop when the curtain falls. Afterwards, it’s time for the legendary Silent Disco. If you’ve never been to one, it’s a surreal experience. Everyone gets a pair of headphones, and you choose between different DJs playing everything from 90s bangers to today's biggest anthems. The tent is filled with people dancing and singing their hearts out, but to anyone without headphones, it's completely silent. It’s a unique and hilarious way to continue the party late into the night. This night combines the best of burlesque and a good old-fashioned disco.

A change of pace and a touch of culture

The Spiegeltent isn’t just about high-energy parties. It's also a place for amazing musical talent and rich cultural experiences. On 28 June, the incredible saxophonist Jess Gillam will be performing with her trio. She was the youngest ever soloist to play at the Last Night of the Proms, which is a pretty big deal. Her trio performs an amazing mix of music, from jazz and folk tunes to classical pieces. It’s a chance to see a truly gifted musician in a beautiful setting. Then, on 1 July, the mood shifts for the Indian Summer Soirée. This is an evening dedicated to the soul-stirring world of Indian classical music, featuring renowned sitar and tabla players. It’s an immersive experience designed to be both soothing and inspiring, offering a wonderful slice of different arts and culture. There's even a pre-show talk about Indian classical music for those who want to learn a bit more.

Reliving the glory days of the 90s

To round off the ten-day extravaganza, the Spiegeltent is hosting the ultimate nostalgia trip on 4 July with Jimmy’s Night. For anyone who grew up in or around Harrogate, Jimmy's nightclub was the place to be in the 90s. This tribute night is a chance to hit the dancefloor and relive those 90s glory days. Expect all the classic tunes that had people queuing down the street back in the day. It’s the perfect way to close the festival – a massive party celebrating a piece of local history. It promises to be a raucous, fun-filled finale to the whole Spiegeltent celebration.

What the people behind the festival are saying

The excitement isn’t just for the audience. The people organising and sponsoring the event are just as thrilled. Ben Ogden, from Ogden of Harrogate, shared his thoughts:

“The Spiegeltent is a stunning venue and this Festival brings joy and a touch of glamour to people’s lives, which makes it the perfect fit for us. Spiegeltents, like Ogden’s, have a rich and vibrant history, and we are looking forward to seeing the diverse array of dazzling performers who will light up Harrogate this summer.”

Sharon Canavar, the Chief Executive of Harrogate International Festivals, also highlighted the special atmosphere of the event. She said:

“It’s fantastic to have the Spiegeltent back in town – there’s nothing quite like it. We passionately believe the arts are for every generation and should appeal to as wide an audience as possible – which is what this Festival does. So whether you fancy watching Hope & Social and discovering your new favourite band, learning all about Indian classical music, or reliving your youth at Jimmy’s – there really is something for everyone. The Spiegeltent is a joyful celebration of great music and culture. So get the dates in your diary for what is, quite simply, the best party in town!”

More to come and how to get tickets

This is just the first wave of news, with more exciting announcements about what's happening at the Spiegeltent expected in the coming weeks. It’s clear this is going to be a highlight of the summer in Crescent Gardens. The full lineup shows a real mix of music and arts, ensuring there's a party for all tastes.
