As the nights get longer and there's a definite chill in the air, it’s about that time when everyone starts looking for something to add a bit of sparkle to the end of the year. Well, this November, the entire Wakefield district is set to get a massive dose of brightness. Wakefield Council has pulled together a whole series of events called Light Up, designed to officially start the festive season with a bang. It's not just about one big event in the city; this is a celebration spreading right across the district, with plenty of community-led events making sure everyone gets a bit of that festive magic. It's the perfect way to mark the shift from the cosy autumnal season to the full-on festive period.

Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, shared the excitement, saying:

“We can’t wait to welcome everyone to enjoy the fun and festive cheer at these special events, with so much to see and do across our wonderful district.”

Getting the festive feeling across the district

Before the main event in Wakefield city centre, the festive spirit kicks off in towns across the area. Think of it as a warm-up for the big show. These are proper, cosy community events, the kind where you bump into neighbours and friends. It all starts with a series of brilliant Christmas Light Switch On evenings. Each town will have its own unique vibe, but they all promise that classic, heartwarming feeling that really gets the festive season going. The whole idea is to bring people together for a good time.

Here’s a quick look at where and when these local celebrations are happening:

But a Christmas Light Switch On is never just about flicking a switch, is it? It's about the whole atmosphere. People can wander through festive markets, finding unique gifts from local traders or just soaking up the sights and sounds. There will be live performances on a main stage, showcasing local talent and getting everyone into the party mood. And, of course, there’s the food. Delicious street food and warm drinks will be available to keep everyone going. It’s a full-on experience with plenty to do before the big countdown to the switch-on that will light up the town centres. These events really capture the spirit of the season.

A spectacular light trail in Wakefield

Then, from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 November, the focus moves to Wakefield city centre for the main Light Up Wakefield event. The city's official Christmas Light Switch On will take place at 5:30 pm on Friday 21 November in the Cathedral Precinct, which is sure to be a magical moment. For three days, the city will be transformed by more incredible art installations than ever before, creating a trail of light and wonder that’s perfect for exploring on a crisp November evening.

To get started, everyone should head to the Event Hub at WX (that’s Wakefield Exchange). There, people can pick up a free trail map, which is the key to finding all the amazing light-based artworks dotted around the city. It’s like a treasure hunt, but instead of gold, the prize is discovering breathtaking pieces of art. The trail is designed for people to follow at their own pace, making it a great evening out for families, couples, or groups of friends. These events are a fantastic way to start feeling festive this November.

What exactly are these art installations?

This isn't just about pretty fairy lights strung on trees. Light Up Wakefield brings in artists to create some truly special pieces. One of the highlights is an interactive installation from an artist named Maxime Touroute called ‘Let’s Draw’. Basically, it’s a giant digital mural where members of the public can create their own designs, which then become part of an ever-changing piece of art. It’s a chance for everyone to get creative and literally leave their mark on the festival.

Another must-see piece is the ‘Ship of the Gods’ by Heinrich and Palmer. This one is inspired by Norse mythology – think epic tales of Vikings and their gods. It’s bound to be a powerful and awe-inspiring sight. And for something completely different, Jack Cheesebrough’s ‘Rever’ at Outpoint Studio promises a journey through dreamscapes. Imagine stepping into a vivid dream, a world made of light and sound. These art installations are what make the Light Up events in the Wakefield district so unique. They offer an experience that goes beyond a typical switch-on event, making for an unforgettable start to the festive season this November.
