•Everyone loves the idea of a good old-fashioned seaside holiday. Packing the car, heading to the coast, building sandcastles… it’s what brilliant memories are made of. But for some families, a simple break can feel like an impossible dream. When a child has complex medical needs, or a family is facing tough times, getting away isn't just difficult; it's often completely out of the question. That’s where an amazing charity steps in. The Principle Trust Children’s Charity has just opened a brand-new holiday home in Yorkshire, specifically designed to give these families the break they desperately need and deserve. This isn't just any holiday home; it's a place built with incredible care and thought, offering vital respite to those who need it most.

A holiday home with a difference
So, what makes this new place so special? Located at Haven Holiday Park in Primrose Valley, this isn't your average caravan. It's the charity's third fully accessible respite home, and every single detail has been planned to help children and adults with physical disabilities or challenging medical conditions. The goal is to remove the barriers that stop these families from having a proper, relaxing holiday. Think about it. For many, just getting through the front door of a holiday rental is the first hurdle. But this home is designed for ease and comfort, providing the right support for vulnerable children and their families.
The accommodation has been carefully adapted to make life easier. It’s all about creating a safe, comfortable space where a family can get the respite they need. The features include:
Wheelchair ramp access: No struggling with steps, just a smooth, easy way to get in and out.
Wider doorways and sliding doors: Plenty of space to move around comfortably in a wheelchair.
A ceiling-mounted bed trapeze: This bit of kit in the main bedroom offers extra support and independence for those with limited mobility.
A fully adapted wet room: Making personal care simple and stress-free.
This special home provides accommodation for up to four people, meaning families can enjoy a break together. It's this kind of thoughtful design that transforms a holiday from a stressful challenge into a restorative experience. The Principle Trust Children’s Charity understands that a break like this is more than just a getaway; it's a chance for families to recharge their batteries and make precious memories.
Why Primrose Valley is the perfect spot
Choosing the right location is just as important as the home itself. And Filey's Primrose Valley is a brilliant choice. The area offers that classic Yorkshire coastal beauty, with fresh sea air and sandy beaches. The holiday park itself is completely family-friendly, packed with entertainment and leisure activities. There's even a direct path to the beach, so a day by the sea is easy to manage. It's the perfect setting for families to relax and have fun together, away from the pressures of everyday life.
There's also a very practical reason for choosing this spot. The charity listened to feedback from the people they help, and one of the biggest problems for low-income families is the cost of travel. A long, expensive journey can make a holiday impossible before it even starts. By setting up a new home on the Yorkshire coast, the charity is making its respite breaks much easier to get to for families living in East and South Yorkshire. This means less time on the road, less money spent on petrol, and more time enjoying the holiday. The Principle Trust Children’s Charity also hopes this new location will help it build stronger partnerships with local organisations, ensuring their support reaches the families who need it most.
The big picture: 15 years of support
This new home in Primrose Valley is part of a much bigger story. The Principle Trust Children’s Charity is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, marking a decade and a half of incredible work. The charity was started back in 2011 by its founder, Mike Davies MBE, with a clear mission: to provide support for vulnerable children and families through free respite breaks. What started as a small project has grown into something amazing.
With this new property, the Yorkshire-based charity now owns eight respite homes across the north of England, in places like Blackpool, the Lake District, and now two in Filey. Over the years, this incredible charity has given almost 6,000 children the chance to have a much-needed holiday. Now, with the eighth home up and running, it can help around 308 families every single year. These respite breaks are life-changing, offering a moment of peace and happiness to families facing unimaginable challenges. The charity’s continued work shows a deep commitment to providing consistent and meaningful support for children across the region.
A word from the founder
The founder of the charity, Mike Davies MBE, shared his thoughts on this latest achievement. It’s clear that the opening of the new home is a significant moment, especially during the charity’s 15th anniversary:
“This opening is a hugely proud moment for the charity as we celebrate our 15th anniversary. We know that families caring for children with complex needs face enormous daily pressures, and something as simple as a holiday can feel completely out of reach. This new home means more families across Yorkshire can experience precious time together, rest, and make happy memories in a safe and supportive environment.”
It’s about understanding the daily reality for these families and providing a practical, powerful way to help. It’s about creating a space where children can just be children, and where families can build happy memories that will last a lifetime. The new, fully accessible holiday home is a testament to this wonderful mission, providing essential respite for years to come.
