There’s a brand-new Netflix period drama that everyone’s talking about — and it has a strong Yorkshire connection. House of Guinness, from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, brings the gripping story of one of Ireland’s most famous families to life, with much of the lavish action filmed right here in Yorkshire. The show, which premiered on October 1, 2025, transforms the stunning Broughton Hall Estate near Skipton into the Guinness family’s grand 19th-century home. With its sweeping staircases, glass conservatory, and landscaped grounds, Broughton Hall isn’t just a backdrop — it’s a character in its own right.

The story behind House of Guinness

Set in the 1860s, the drama begins with the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, the man who turned the Dublin brewery into a global empire. His four adult children — Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben — suddenly find themselves in charge of one of the world’s biggest businesses. The series follows their power struggles, ambitions, and the personal costs of success as they fight to keep the Guinness name on top.

Steven Knight describes the show:

“The extraordinary story of a young family handed an empire.”

“Their father’s will forces them to work together — and against each other — as they try to keep the world’s most famous stout alive.”

Expect feuds, romance, and more than a few dark secrets.

Yorkshire’s starring role: Broughton Hall

Although the story is rooted in Dublin, House of Guinness found its visual soul in Yorkshire. Broughton Hall, part of the 2,500-acre Broughton Sanctuary estate on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, doubles as the Guinness family’s St. Anne’s estate. Its period architecture, sprawling parkland, and elegant interiors offered the perfect stand-in for Victorian Ireland.

If the location looks familiar, that’s because Broughton Hall has become a favourite for film crews, previously appearing in Gentleman Jack, All Creatures Great and Small, and Emily. During the House of Guinness shoot, the estate’s ballroom and conservatory were transformed into glittering party scenes, while its landscaped gardens became the stage for some of the show’s most dramatic moments.

For visitors, the estate’s connection to the series doesn’t end on screen — Broughton Hall is opening for exclusive stays this winter, so fans can quite literally walk in the footsteps of the Guinness dynasty.

Who’s in the cast?

The star-studded ensemble includes:

  • Anthony Boyle as Arthur Guinness
  • Louis Partridge as Edward Guinness
  • Emily Fairn as Anne Plunket (née Guinness)
  • Fionn O’Shea as Benjamin Guinness
  • James Norton as Sean Rafferty
  • Niamh McCormack as Ellen Cochrane
  • Danielle Galligan as Lady Olivia Hedges
  • Jack Gleeson as Byron Hedges
  • Michael McElhatton as John Potter

Knight hints that the tension between Arthur and Edward drives much of the drama:

“Before he died, their father chained them together in responsibility for the brewery — and you’ll find out why when you watch.”

Why it’s one to watch

With its mix of history, power struggles, and lavish Yorkshire scenery, House of Guinness feels like a natural successor to Peaky Blinders. Between the sweeping shots of Broughton Hall and the fiery family drama at its heart, this is one Netflix series where Yorkshire truly steals the spotlight.
