Rising stars in South Yorkshire
The South Yorkshire Swans, based primarily in Rotherham, have been achieving remarkable success despite being a relatively small club. Their recent accomplishments include impressive performances at the Yorkshire Artistic Swimming Championships in Leeds and the National Combo Cup held at Sheffield's Ponds Forge International Sports Centre. These competitions have highlighted the club's growing presence in the sport, with several podium finishes that have put them on the map.
Yorkshire artistic swimming championships
The Swans delivered a strong performance at the Yorkshire Artistic Swimming Championships. The club's 15-18 age group team claimed first place, while the under-15s secured silver, demonstrating their prowess in the water. One standout swimmer, Macey Hewett, aged 13, earned a silver medal in the individual figure grade competition, showcasing her skill and dedication to the sport.
National Combo Cup achievements
In July, the Swans continued to impress at the National Combo Cup. The club's 15-and-under team earned a commendable seventh-place finish, while the under-12s took tenth in their category, competing against some of the best teams from across the country. These results underscore the club's ability to compete at a national level, even with limited training opportunities compared to larger clubs.
Dedication and team spirit
Head coach Lisa Hesling expressed immense pride in her athletes, highlighting the dedication and hard work they put into their training.
"I'm so proud of all the girls. They have been training hard for both these competitions and gave it their all on the day,"
said Lisa. Despite training just twice a week, the Swans have demonstrated that passion and commitment can lead to outstanding results.
Lisa also emphasized the camaraderie and fun that the girls experience as part of the club.
"Compared to many of the other clubs there, we are a small club, but the girls always try so hard, and most importantly, have lots of fun,"
she added. The team spirit and friendships formed through artistic swimming are just as important as the medals and accolades.
Inspiration from Olympic success
The recent Olympic Games in Paris provided an additional boost of motivation for the Swans. Childhood friends Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe secured silver in the duet category, marking Team GB's first medals in the sport. This achievement has inspired the young swimmers in South Yorkshire to strive for excellence, dreaming of future Olympic success of their own.
A growing legacy
Founded in 2009, the South Yorkshire Swans have grown to include over 30 swimmers aged between seven and 18. The club remains dedicated to nurturing young talent, offering opportunities for both boys and girls who are competent swimmers and eager to learn the intricacies of artistic swimming. With each competition, the Swans continue to build their reputation, contributing to the sport's development in the region.
The South Yorkshire Swans’ recent successes are a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of both the swimmers and their coaches. As they continue to compete and grow, they are setting a strong example for aspiring artistic swimmers across the region. With the inspiration of Olympic achievements and the support of a close-knit community, the Swans are truly swanning their way to success.
