First Visit to Knaresborough – A Summer Surprise at Six Poor Folk It was my first time visiting Knaresborough, and a heatwave had just arrived. The sun was blazing, and we were desperate to find somewhere indoors for lunch — and to cool off. That’s how we ended up at Six Poor Folk. The interior felt like a cosy little cottage, with huge floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out onto the charming street scene outside. There’s even an upstairs seating area. The whole place felt clean, tidy, and inviting. We were greeted by a lovely waitress with beautiful long hair — friendly and chatty — who brought us chilled water with lemon slices to help us cool down. Such a thoughtful touch. There were two of us, and we ordered the Fish Butty with hand-cut chips and the Buffalo Chicken. The presentation was elegant and the flavours didn’t disappoint. The haddock in the Fish Butty was perfectly cooked, paired with fresh and crispy baby gem lettuce — absolutely delicious. The Buffalo Chicken came with a green sauce that was both unique and flavourful, adding an interesting twist to the dish. But the biggest surprise? The ladies’ toilet. It was spotless — honestly one of the cleanest I’ve ever come across — and stocked with thoughtful extras like feminine products. A small detail, but it left a big impression. All in all, Six Poor Folk offered not just a lovely meal but also a truly welcoming and comfortable experience. Would definitely return!

Food was good with slightly hard green beans but everybody's tastes are different We had chicken Sunday roast. I had a nice pint of cask bitter and my other half had Lager and lime. Price was £45 roughly. Staff, from walking in to leaving were polite and very helpful.

Recommended by the tour guide at the castle in Knaresborough. This place did not disappoint. I was looking for a 'Sunday Roast' and it delivered! Absolutely delicious. I was warmly greeted by the owner and enjoyed a lovely totally English meal here. A souvenir to remember.

Great little place in the beautiful historic market town of Knaresborough. We were so lucky to get a table for 2 for Sunday lunch. Would advise booking! Staff friendly, especially the lady that was out waitress. Sunday lunch freshly cooked and served nice and hot. Great atmosphere and nice and festive for Christmas. Highly recommended.

A lovely bar where Casta and Jorvic made new friends. The building occupants once cared for up to six poor folk but no Flat Eric's. A choice of 4 real ales. I ticked off another brewery with my first ever pint from Amity Brew Co, A West Yorkshire brewery. In the 2025 CAMRA Good Beer Guide and also has a Cask Marque. An upstair room and rear beer garden. Food looks good. My better half loves this bar, as do I.
