Amazing piece of history opposite St James Hospital. One of Leeds 19th century graveyards, 180,000 burials between 1845-2001 covering 2 cholera epidemics. Sadly the graves are no longer maintained, some areas have lost their headstones & it is difficult to find a map or locate the position of numbered graves, but still well worth a visit
We visited Beckett Street Cemetery on a wet and misty November morning, specifically to eyeball a couple of grave markers belonging to some ancestors of mine. As we stepped through the gates, the sun started to peep through and lit up the most amazing Victorian Cemetery. Thick with trees and filled with thousands of markers and monuments, it was so atmospheric. The day we visited, people were in working to keep the place useable, a never ending task I'd imagine, but to get the visitors in, everything has to be safe. We didn't have enough time to explore properly, but I found the grave markers I was looking for and will contact the Friends group with a slight amendment to their records. If I'm ever in Leeds again, I'm heading straight for Beckett Street.
Peaceful and well maintained , has a quite and majestic atmosphere allows for much reflection and appreciation of who came before us. - Truly Soberly Beautiful.
Beautiful, peaceful and quite haunting. I came here looking for a great, great grandfathers grave and found a wonderfully contemplative space.
Not to be explored at night! Not ghost but muggers etc... But a cemetery of great historical significance. It is the resting place of many famous/infamous people along with people from the charge of the light brigade! If you're from Leeds you may find relatives there in the penny graves. I did
