The incline on the other side of the railway line holds row upon of flat gravestones on the embankment, however all of this is exactly as designed. An Act of Parliament allowed for the railway line to bisect the graveyard yet instead of creating an arched viaduct that would have destroyed the graveyard below a solid embankment was legally required. Gravestones were lifted and large amounts of soil were placed on top of the existing graves to create the incline, each gravestone was then re-laid in the same position as before maintaining the relationship between gravestone and original resting place.
