St John the Evangelist's Church, Leeds

About

Description

The church of St John the Evangelist is famed for its beautiful 17th century carving on the box pews, wall panels, pulpit, and lectern. The pièce de résistance is the screen, which is a wonderful example of the exuberance of 17th century woodcarving. The mullions have carved tulips, acorns, grapes and pendants. The frieze has wonderfully executed griffins, hearts, flowers, green men, a lion head, and carved grotesque male heads. The screen is surmounted by two coats of arms; above the north aisle appears that of James I and to the south, Charles I.
