What an adventure we went on! The warm welcome, the exploration of Disease Street and a Laboratory themed on Poo. A great day out out for the family in a beautiful building. We didn't try the café but it was busy and smelled great. The gift shop was also well stocked and gave us lots of options.
The walkthrough mock Victorian street in Leeds was really well put together. You could choose your character and see what happened to them at the end of the street. After this there was a video playing of a surgery that was a bit graphic, but it is signposted to not go any further if it upsets you. There were a few temporary exhibitions on the ground floor, and then a display of medical devices and artifacts upstairs. The upstairs section could do with a little more curating, it felt a bit jarring to move from a section on LGBTQ+ health to a section on war medicine. Overall a really wonderful museum and fascinating to learn all about Leeds' history and medicine though the years. Staff were very kind, tickets were £9, £12 regular and £16 gratitude. Cafe on the ground floor had a small variety of baked treats and drinks. Do not recommend exploring the surrounding area on foot, especially at night, take a bus or an uber.
The walk through old Leeds back in the day really gave you an insight on how life must of been. The smells were revolting and you can imagine what it must of been like for the everyday people living there life’s. Certainly makes you think how easy disease spread. Worth a visit.
We visited this museum as a adult group, I think going in I expected a little more from it than a plethora of information boards and items to look at. The museum starts off strong with a good area that interactive and enjoyable to look around but after the initial section just drops to displayed items and information boards. Probably better for kids as there was plenty of sections for them, even to the point they had them in the walk way may it difficult to pass parts as there were so many kids taking part in the interactive section they decided to have mid corridor. I feel it needs updating or the initial section that is good expanding throughout to bring it up to date. Was looking forward to going here and have wanted to for a while but for sure won't be returning sadly.
Informative, fascinating and enlightening. With a wife in the medical profession and a son learning about the history of medicine, we decided to take a visit. The building is a wonderful example of Victorian architecture, but the most interesting things are inside. Each section has been thoughtfully laid out (although some may be squeamish for little ones). Excellent value for money. Great cakes in the Café too
