Thwaite Watermill
About
Description
Thwaite Mills Watermill was a bustling industrial site for hundreds of years. Its riverside location made it an ideal place for large waterwheels which have powered various industries as far back as 1641. Experience the wheels in motion on a tour of the museum, feel the force of water power and see how solid rock can be turned into paint and putty. Also be sure to check out our exhibitions in Thwaite House showing off what life was like living on the island and working at the mill in the 1940s, without electricity or modern appliances as we know them!
Our tiny island setting also offers access to some beautiful wildlife trails along the Aire and Calder River and sleepy picnic spots with stunning waterside views. If you haven’t stocked up before you visit then drinks and ice creams are available from the museum shop along with souvenirs, traditional toys and pocket-money treats. On special event days there might also be the chance to take a boat trip along the canal and view our beautiful island from the water’s edge.
If that’s not enough then we have a whole host of events running through the year including Spring Festival, school holiday workshops and vintage car and bus days.
